Yeah, transport is one area where this concept makes a lot of sense. I have a car that sits idle all night. Transports one person to work. Sits idle all day. Transports one person home. Its pretty inefficient.

As it is, cars are more of an object of leisure/luxury than efficiency, but it has become incredibly widespread. We live in a reality where humans didn't have this luxury so widespread not too long ago... like, 100 years ago isn't really a lot of time in all human history. So quickly cars grew to become a symbol of freedom that didn't use to exist, and we only started worrying about efficiency very recently.

The way to solve this is to place bets on public transports. If I had a train that took me to the city to visit my family, faster and cheaper than my car, I wonder if I would even keep my car at all.

And for car lovers, who really want to own a car, hopefully will go for cleaner energy sources.

I agree...but it doesn't always work. In my part of the world, a high speed rail was planned. It was mostly paid for with private donations plus a grant from the government. It would have helped my husband's long commute, where he has to drive 80 miles a day with lots of other cars.

However, the Governor of our lovely state decided it was a government handout, in-spite of all the business money raised. Even though the people of the state had legally voted for this high speed rail and our state laws say they won, the governor refused the money and the project was cancelled. Some other state got the money and no rail for us.

This happened all over the U.S. in various locals. Sad because when I worked in Chicago, I rode the train for a half hour each way, every day. I loved it.

So...until clean and inexpensive transportation becomes a priority over spending money on gas and oil, "renting" transportation in most of the country other than big progressive cities just isn't going to happen. Instead, our states turn into parking lots with huge amounts of highway construction that never ends...with...you guessed it...government subsidies.

Big Brother is monitoring and exercising total control over peoples' lives. Punishing people for cheating is not Big Brother.

In any case, even something as minor as basketball during recess has rules. When have you ever played a game of basketball and you didn't have to dribble?

@angrypenguin my step dad does that. It's even worse in his case because he has to pay income tax for both NJ where he lives and NY where he works.

Taxes don't support that system, postage does, and any other fees they charge for certain services (P.O. boxes, certified mail, return receipt, etc). The USPS isn't allowed to take any of our tax money, it's legally mandated to be self-sustaining.

    But back on-topic...

lol.. when you put it that way it doesn't sound so bad... but seriously, and back to OP's question and the related story

First of all, if they really found 30,000 people cheating to the extent that they deserved any kind of ban (temporary or permanent), I think the cheaters aren't the only ones who owe the honest players a public apology.

Cheating in a single-player game, in my opinion, is no big deal. It doesn't hurt anyone and it might make the game more enjoyable for you (or it might not, depending on the reasons you play games). Cheating and griefing in multiplayer games, and especially MMOs, I think is serious enough that it deserves some kind of punishment. Whether you paid to play the game is really irrelevant, you also agreed to follow certain rules and you're ruining the game for those honest players who also paid to play the game and play by the rules they agreed to.

I don't think it's serious enough that it should be a civil or criminal matter (although technically I guess it could be, at least, a breach of contract.. just a layman's opinion), but I think banning those players is fair. You purchased a license to play the game, that license came with certain terms (EULA and/or TOS) and if you violate those terms your license can be revoked. To continue with the car analogy, you purchase from the DMV a license to drive your car on your state's public roads and highways for a certain number of years, that license comes with certain terms (usually in your state's Vehicle Code or similar) and if you violate those rules that license can be revoked, taking away your access to your state's highways. You can still drive on private property all you want, but you can't take your car out on the street where your reckless disregard for the rules might endanger other drivers.

As far as public humiliation.. I honestly think it's a better (more effective, and less expensive) punishment for certain offenses than the punishments we currently use. We waste billions of dollars every year imprisoning people for nonviolent crimes when it would be just as well and cost nearly nothing to humiliate them and have them shunned by their community. In gaming, especially MMO games where you often rely on the help of other players, that could effectively be worse than even a ban. Maybe give the characters a mark next to their name to let everyone know they've been caught cheating. ;)

Torchlight did this. Mods were fine, but if you used level up commands and such, the game appended ' the cheat' to your name.
