Any thoughts on retro looking games?
Do you think those 32 colors are boring or they can create some kind of nostalgic feeling?
Tell me what you guys think about it!

    Tbh, it's looks pretty nasty.

I don't think that period of games that people are really that nostalgic about.

looks quite bad.. maybe with different palette it would be better? or without outlines / thick outlines / colored outlines..
(also UI+fonts could match the style..)

The problem is that 32 ColorStep posterization does not make the look retro.
Your underlying models don't have a very high fidelity yet, either. So far it looks like what it is: basic models, with a few newer effects (lensflare) and a flattened posterize filter on top.

If you want retro you may rather want to try lowPoly models with nice hand painted textures. Think "Daikatana" for example. WIle the gameplay is very debateable the graphics and style are pretty good and still in a time that can be considered retro.
Or if you really want that retro look - the true retro look - then you could try to create your textures in 256x256 size and 256 colors. Not just a post process effect. Make sure to use point filtering in that case. Not bilinear.

Tried this and got no results better than this, looks like it's not going to happen.
And the UI is just there for testing purposes, I've forgot to rip them off.

Thank you for the tips, I'm really not an artist's, it's good to see how you guys think and learn something. Your opinion makes good sense to me, thanks!

I thought of the retro thing not too long ago also.
I was wondering why we seem to have avoided a generation of games - as retro remakes. The first generation PS1 era with super low resolution models, textures and animations - and awkward controls schemes.
Some of those game concepts were really cool. Summoner and Soul Reaver come to mind.
The texture artists (skinners) of that era did amazing things.

I think giving yourself a 256 color pallet, painting all surface details into the texture and improving the quality of the models could lead to something that looks interesting.
