Got a new project idea. Where to start?

    Hello Unity Forum.

    After I have succesfully finish my first game, Im now ready to get started on my next game.

    I have thought about what the game should be about, but I dont know where to start.

    How do i splits things up, so I have a better view over my project?

    Choose the platform, think what type of players do you want to target. Think of games they play now. Create similar game. Profit :D

    Brainstorming on paper always works for me.
    I use https://www.lift.do/ for a routine of "one idea per day" and got 70+ now :)

    I know the game, how all mechanics and the point of the game
    I know it will be on mobile Device
    I know it shall be a multiplayer game.

    But is there any method to split the project into smaller pieces?

    I would just start making it. Look at what it will take in terms of bare functionality to get a test bed up and running. Then, pick a system and make it you goal to implement it. If you don't have a clear, compartmental view of the systems in your game, bust out a pen and paper and try to diagram it. Input is probably a system, graphics, sound, player objects, HUD. I believe in design documents, but rapid prototyping has been working really well for me lately as a solo developer. Just my 2 cents =P

    I'm probably less experienced than you MG but Beef really hit it on the head. I'd only add after breaking down the game play elements on paper into prototype-able functional elements, when prototyping keep in mind 'find the fun' not just getting it to work properly.
    I also believe in documentation because I end up reworking elements over and over. If I don't document I end up going in circles. The morgue is my friend. :)

    I guess your first game must have been a disorganised car crash and you want to improve it for the second? I also recommend Trello :)

    There are many methods to do this but the most common is to start by penning it all down with images and all as a concept document which then grows into a design document. The mechanics and other features are then broken into tasks and you can use the design document to check for inter-dependencies.

    Alternatively, if you understand your features and their necessary tasks well enough etc... then use a online system to brake it into tasks. I prefer the analogue option and have a pile of post-it notes spread across a whiteboard that hangs next to my computer. Everything is organized based on dependencies and I move finished stuff into a corner where I can take a look at previous tasks if needed.

    Are you asking how to split it up into pieces? Maybe you're not quite ready to tackle a multiplayer game yet. Or, maybe I'm misunderstanding. Get a piece of paper, write down the tasks, break those into smaller tasks, and go to work. If it's a team, consider a tool like Trello, Trac, or Fogbugz. Though, my guess is that you're scope is too big, so I'd recommend making a few more SMALL games to give you more experience.
