    Hello everyone

I have become interested in Game Development for some time now. I have looked into the many engines and decided to settle on Unity simply because it looks to be absolutely great in regards to the community and overwhelming amount of effort put into the tutorials.

My programming knowledge is very basic - non existent and I am looking for advice to rectify that.

Where should I start? (Had a brief look at tutorials and teaching section - But they seem to be to target specific things) - I know that is very vague but imagine you had no knowledge what/where would you start with.

Should I learn everything for myself at least a very basic level or focus on a specific skill set and then use the asset store for the rest?

Is it necessary to upgrade to Unity Pro or should I wait till I am more knowledgeable?

I guess I should tell you what I want from this all to help you understand where to direct me.. I wanted to start out with an FPS however in a blank room where I could create guns and then test the feel of them in that room until I was happy with how the weapons feel and then move onto map design then finally the HUD and Menus.

Thank you for reading this and I appreciate it very much if you answer and help me out.:D

You should look up general programming tutorials online then, learn about the absolute basics such as variables, functions, classes, etc. The beginner unity tutorials do go over some of this, but some of the tutorials are Unity-specific http://unity3d.com/learn/tutorials/modules/beginner/scripting

Hmm, if you want to dive straight into Unity, I would recommend the Walker Boys Tutorials http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/unity-3-video-training-course-free-walker-boys.69938/. Great set of tutorials that I've personally finished.

When I had no knowledge, I started with much more simpler engines, such as Game Maker, read lots of general programming tutorials online, youtube videos, just to get the general idea. Then I started learning Unity.

Depends I guess, I can't really tell you what you should learn, because I wouldn't consider myself an expert, but from my experience it's nice to know a little bit of everything.

It is absolutely not necessary to upgrade to pro. When you have limited knowledge the additional features are not needed.

You don't want to start out with an FPS, you want to start out with a cube and make it move.

    - I don't claim to be an expert. I just answered your questions to the best of my abilities, hope it helps.
