Get the direction an object is moving

I'm trying to animate an object with mecanim and it has different animations for every direction, right now I'm using booleans to tell the animator where I'm going but it's not smooth at all, I tried looking for a way to get the direction the object is moving but no dice, can someone please help me?

specifically the 2d variant (forward/backward left/right), should be plenty of tutorials out there with the specifics for unit movement.
