Gear VR Testing?

I don't know if this as been answer yet but if it has I apologize for my ignorance but I have tried to search for this answer and I have not found anyone asking this question.
Can I do a Samsung Gear VR build test on a smart phone that is not a Samsung Note4? For example can I make build and test it on a Samsung Galaxy S5?

 

Sadly not. When you make a Samsung Gear VR app, you need to install it on the Note 4 and run it. When you run it, you get a popup asking to put the Note 4 into the headset. When done, put the headset on, and the headset turns on the application ( little light sensors knows you put it on ) From there the app starts and you can test it.

However. you can test the application on a total different way. Create a Google Cardboard application which you can 100% test on your mobile device. Make the interface work with mouse button 0 and 1 and the keyboard escape button. When you're done, have a Gear VR as test, remap the buttons, put another OVRController in it and it works like a charm.

However, keep in mind that the Gear VR and Cardboard plugin do not work properly when you have them both imported into the same project. So when you test for Gear VR, just delete all Cardboard SDK files and reimport the Gear VR SDK.

Thank you JDMulti. I wasn't sure if anyone would know the answer or even tried something like this. Reason I ask is because I haven't purchase either the note 4 or the gear and I want to participate in the VR competition Samsung has going.

 

one thing i found that you can still open the app without the gearVR by enabling the developer mode on the samsung device.

to enable the developer mode you must have one test APK installed on the device. as it scans for a debug build installed
