Gear VR: APK launching in VR Mode even when VR mode is disabled?

I am creating an application for Android and Gear VR that will, in the end, be two separate applications: one that is used as a control panel, and one that is used as a VR video player.

Up until today, I have been able to simply disable "Virtual Reality Supported" in Player Settings -> XR Settings and the APK would launch in normal 2D mode and not ask me to plug the device into the Gear VR headset.

This morning I did two things:
    (1) re-imported the OVR Plugin to make sure it was up to date
    (2) changed my product name and package name in Player Settings

...in order to get ready to create my two separate APKs (one that has VR mode enabled, and one that doesn't).

I managed to build the VR enabled APK, called "AndroidClient", however when I change the product name and package name to "AndroidServer" and turn off "Virtual Reality Supported" in the XR Settings, the APK builds but still prompts me with the message: "To open this application, insert your device into your Gear VR."

Now, simple toggling "Virtual Reality Supported" used to make this work no problem, but today, somewhere between getting into the office and performing those two changes mentioned above, everything broke and it always seem to build an APK that prompts me to plug it into the Gear VR, even with "Virtual Reality Supported" turned off.

Any idea why this would be happening?

Did you find a solution to this? The same thing is happening to me.

I think so... If I remember correctly, a plugin I was using was automatically re-enabling VRMode in the player settings on build.
