Gauging Interest in Procedural Generator of Simple Objects

Discussion in 'Assets and Asset Store' started by Billy4184, Feb 8, 2015.

?

Would you be interested in an Editor extension for procedurally generating simple objects?

I've been toying around with generating meshes in the editor and would like to gauge interest in procedurally generated, relatively simple objects, such as:

    - Vehicles
    - Characters
    - Houses
    - Props
    - etc

Bear in mind I am talking about cartoony, boxy sorts of things with very low polygon count (probably <100 right now - though it could go up if I get better at it). Edit: Bevelled edges are being considered for now.

I would write an editor extension in which these objects could be generated randomly (within constraints) or with specific properties. They would be generated ready to use, i.e., cars with wheel joints, characters with armature, and a simple controller script for each.

I have two possible texturing ideas: 1) incorporate some sort of simple texture generation in the editor and/or 2) export a UV layout which can be taken to gimp/photoshop.

These would be probably most useful for either testing out ideas or making a simple mobile game.

Edit: Please comment below for which particular asset this would be most useful to you for.

    Thanks for your input!

Keep those votes coming! But don't forget to comment about which asset type that you would like to see, as this allows me to start prototyping and working out possible issues. All comments and questions welcome! :)

Hard to gauge without a basic example of what will be achieved :p, if it's something like the procedurally generated monsters of No Man's Sky, count me in! :)

What I'm talking about are <100 polygon objects, real boxy stuff atm but still potentially useful for prototyping or making a simple game. I'm looking into bevelling at least one level to improve the look but I'm not sure what kind of complexity it will add.

The idea is to be able to quickly generate the lowest level of 3D geometry at a reasonable quality. Textures will probably be better off customized but some level of in-editor texturing will be available. And ready-to-go with scripts, rigidbodies and colliders is something I definitely want to have.

I will hopefully have a webplayer up in a week or two with a demo of what kind of stuff I'm talking about. It's very early but that's why I wanted to get a feel for what objects people would like to make, since a flexible procedural generation process will be different, e.g., for a house than it would be for a more complex shape like a character, in terms of where on the model to begin, how to organize the model data for real-time modification, etc.

For now, just think about any objects in the <100 polygon range that you'd really like to be able to generate inside unity. Anything at all will be considered.

No Man's Sky is my inspiration for this project, and I think this is the kind of software that indie devs will increasingly rely on for reducing art asset creation time.

    Thanks for your comment!

Bumping this poll to keep the votes coming :) I'd really like to know what objects you'd like to use this for guys, helps me a lot with focusing my efforts, cheers!
