I tried but really cannot find a good answer. It looks like Unity5 free has everything Unity 4 pro had and more. This sounds to good to be true so that's why I have to ask.

I switch a couple of weeks ago to UE4 mainly because of the dynamic lighting and shading, I just could not get a map look really good in the free version. But UE4, or rather C++ is smacking me in the face. So I just noticed after paying Epic that UE4 is free now and did Unity just answered that with there own free version? I'm starting to like this engine war.

So can I have full access to dynamic lighting and all other pro features for all platforms as well? I will be glad to pay for unity once I reached a quarter of the $100k yearly revenue.

    Thanks in advance,

To good to be true really :). Normally I stay far away from these deals but here I will take the risk of being scammed for thousands of dollars ;).

yes seriously everything is free now. the profiler, ik, light probes, render textures, animation events, etc

i think pro now is mostly about licensing and peripheral services. like cloud build.

Apparently the free version is for individuals or small teams with less than $100,000 in revenue or funding. Which is great news for me. :)

Pro is a really must for any team (no matter how small they are) but also individuals willing to save tons of time with their productivity and workflow. Or if it happens for you or your company to make more than 100 000$ last year. :D
I mean, this is a huge deal.

UE4 is not free, you pay 5% royalties.

Unity 5 is free. And it has shinies now, so all those that went to UE4 for the shinies, will come back to Unity now.

    It is known...

Well I think UE4 still has better shinies but for most people that are familiar with unity will feel highly uncomfortable with C++. I'm a pretty seasoned C#/Java hobbyist and tried to get into C++ but we both dislike each other very much.

But why would the average person need the amount of eye candy offered by UE4? It's suits 3D artists who can show off there skills and perhaps a couple of programmers with lots of artistic talent but otherwise it really is for teams of individually skilled people.

    Hi MadMenyo,

Unity Pro is $1,500- $4,500 (iOS & Android Pro) flat per seat. No yearly fees and no royalties.

i imagine, by having more people with full features, more people will make more than $100,000, and then be forced to buy pro ... lol ... i guess?

You'll find the monetisation of personal is more targeted to the asset store. Every time someone picks up some small script Unity gets 30%. You'll find far more revenue flows in this way then from personal users making it and turning pro.

And those UE4 shinnies are on such a high shelf. Unity's shinnies aren't exactly on the ground, but they are within reach of most people.

Since the free version of Unity 5 now has full features, is that also true of Unity 4?

Nothing changed with Android licenses. You could sell with the free license before, you still can. There are no royalties.

Unity 5 is not quite free. You're paying for it with the adverts for Unity Personal Edition in the splash screen.

Considering most never complete a game, that impression rate is zero. So, free.

You're not really forced to use anything. There are other engines. It's so easy to worry about a colour scheme when you've been given everything else for free.

So the OP and I was talking about engine features and you talk about some theme that has nothing to do with end result. If the day happens that the theme will be available to anyone then you probably cry over the splash screen or switch to the services which you probably want for free too.

Not to mention they have to be successful enough to hit the $100,000 mark before it becomes completely non-free.

Not only that, but since the Personal Edition isn't even a month old, only a handful of games are probably even sporting that mark.

I am speaking statistically, few ever even launch. And since a vast majority of games are below the 2k lifetime revenue make, that would very poor performance for ad revenue, Unity would get better return by putting actual ads in the startup screen. If I was speaking for myself, it has been several years since I have had a game below a million or more impressions a day, (cumulatively a several million daily across my live titles). And over decade since I would have been eligible to use the non-pro version (had it be around back then).

You get a million impressions a day? What do you mean exactly? Because if you had a free game with ads and a million impressions a day you'd be earning about £2500 a day or about a million pounds a year. Are you earning a million pounds a year? Are you writing your writing your messages from on board your private yacht?

He works for a Very Large Well Known company. You don't think that just anyone gets to do Star Wars games, I hope.

Which if you do the math across his team size is not enough for a yacht. If anything you've underestimated his teams gross revenue dramatically.

Not everyone on the forums is living alone in their parents basement.

No yacht, but I do get by. Although I have invested in what most normal people would consider an unhealthy amount of LEGO. ;)

Lies! There is no such thing as an unhealthy amount of LEGO!
Except if you don't have enough LEGO!

It's even more expensive than champagne, perhaps even printer ink!

You must be confused. You seem to think that some things cost more than printer ink.

Can you use the TDD tools in Unity 5 free version? Currently you cannot in 4.6.x.

Yes I mean the Unity Test Tools, and from what I last read I thought that Unity Test Tools in 4.6.x required Pro, am I mistaken?

I believe the PlatformRunner in 4.6 requires Pro, but the rest of the kit should work OK. It all works fine in 5.0 Personal.
