FPSController does not work in Unity 5.3?

I'm trying to following along with tutorials that use the FPSController and according to the tutorials, both book and YouTube I should just be able to drag the FPSController into my scene, click Play and move the character around the scene.

I am unable to do so as it does not respond to any controls, keyboard or otherwise?

I have re-installed the Standard Assets from the Asset Store but still it just sits there not responding to control

Am I missing something?

#UPDATE....scraped project and began anew and all iw working, so original project was corrupt!
