I noticed my Virtual Memory was climbing at a rate of 1GB every ten seconds or so (while the scene is playing), and unity would crash after my hard drive filled. Stopping the scene would stop VM accumulation, but would not reset it to lower levels.

After slowly eliminating everything from my scene, I tracked it down to the [HDR] tickbox on my main camera. If the tickbox is on (even if the scene is empty), virtual memory climbs; tickbox off; all is well.

(I found the best way to monitor this in OSX was to open up the Activity Monitor and double-click on the Unity Editor for "more information"; that's the virtual memory value I was monitoring).

Until this bug can be fixed, just turn off your HDR checkboxes for the time being!

    (I filed a bug report, #661317).
