[Fixed] Android Crash - overflow of global references for android.view.MotionEvent

    I am coding an action game for mobile devices that requires the user to perform a lot of inputs (mainly drag a virtual joystick and press action buttons).

    After 10 minutes or so of play testing on Android the app suddenly crash with this error. Looks like global references for android.view.MotionEvent are not being cleaned but I cannot fathom why. I am not using any native plugins.

    The project is built with Unity 2020.3.35f1 and Input System 1.3.0.

    Any help? I am totally lost with this one. Thank you!



    Edit: Still using the good old UnityEngine.Input class for touchscreen input. Everything else is Input System.

    @silva_raptor We downgraded from unity 2021.3.4f1 to 2021.3.2f1 and we're not getting that crash anymore

    Could you please submit https://unity3d.com/unity/qa/bug-reporting ? This is not a known issue. Since you mentioned MotionEvent, that means it might be linked to touches, producing a large quantity of touch events (like touching a screen with multiple fingers), might help to reproduce this locally.

    I can confirm that I'm having the same issue on 2020.3.35f LTS.

    I had the same issue after upgrading from Unity 2020.3.34f to Unity 2020.3.35f and 2020.3.36f. The crash occurred after a certain number of taps on the screen. Rolled back, the issue disappeared.

    Hi,

    I have created a sample project. If you build the project onto Android phone and continuously swipe the screen without leaving the finger off the screen, you would replicate the crash after 10-20 minutes of swiping.

    Letting the finger off the screen once a while would also crash the game, but it takes longer.

    The crash applies to all android phones we have tested. This crashes on both direct APK install and Google Play install.

    Unity version 2020.3.36f1

    I sent in another bug report (IN-11129) based on a minimal project that exhibit this crash. It appears to be caused by the legacy input system. The minimal project has two UI.Text fields, one of which is Updated() with the current time. That's it. It crashes after about 15 minutes of constant tapping on the screen. The new input system produces no crash/anr after 60 minutes.

    It seems that this would affects every single game with UGUI and the legacy input system.

    If someone has an idea in which version of Unity this was introduced it would be helpful in order to investigate a potential editor downgrade as a temporary solution.

    I have also tested on another empty project running nothing would crash as well. I just use this script just to see how long it survives. I have tried just touching the Android phone screen and moving the finger can still crash the game without calling any Input functions. Still the same logcat error message. Tested on 2020.3.36f

    all of the release version after May, 2022 have issue, you can chose a previous version, for example, 2020.3.34

    We're on 2021.3.5, but we can't downgrade to 2021.3.2 because it's not compatible with UniRx (an issue that was fixed in 2021.3.3).

    But 2021.3.4 - 2021.3.6 android crashes exist

    Hi!
    I upgraded my project to 2022.x and now my build closes randomly after 4-6 min. I also use touch.count for a first person controller. I tried downgrading to 2020.3.3 but I can't due to some errors appearing. What can I do??? I was about to finish my game.

    Downgrading is not supported by Unity, if you do the upgrade, it's always recommended to create a branch in version control, for ex., for specific Unity version, thus you can always safely switch back to previous version if needed.

    You said 2022.x, could you be more specific ?

    Sorry, the version I was on is 2022.1.11f1

    I managed to switch to 2020.3.34f1 and no more crashes! I hope you fix this in new versions.
