Should first person games show your body?

Hey, I was just playing COD and then I realized : where the hell is this dudes body?! When you, (as a normal person) look down, you see your chest, legs and feet. However, in all the first person games I have played, this was never the case. Is it just me or is this pretty weird?

(I believe this is the wrong forum section, this doesn't fit under showcase, should be Gossip)

I agree with you. I always wish there was more effort put into these kind of little details. I am growing tired of shooters because I feel like I am a gun on a tripod moving very stiffly across the terrain. At least let me put the gun down. I feel like my arms are getting tired after a while :p. I feel like there are so many more ways first person games could add immersion.

I plan to look into this in my hobby project to see if it is easy enough to do(if I can get time to work on it again any time soon). My initial thought on it is that it should be as simple as programming the game for third person and then just moving the camera into first person, right? I am going to guess that isn't the case though as there are bound to be issues with clipping that would need to be overcome. I haven't thought too deeply into it yet, but hope to cross that implementation bridge soon.

I know the Halo franchise has let you see your legs since Halo 2 I believe. It even lets your gun point at them, but sadly you can't shoot yourself. I think that level of realism could be fun. Although I can see that would be a lot of extra effort to get all that to work.

I have it implemented in my UFPS game, and looks really good if I may say so myself.
I will post a video today showcasing this.

The only game I can think of that did this properly is Mirror's Edge. I think everyone should do it like that.

Shooting games shouldn't have the feet and legs showing. They would just get in the way when you're shooting downwards. It's already bad enough that they cover the entire screen with a single gun.

In other types of games showing the feet and legs works just fine.

Why would you shoot down? I think the best way to make an fps is taping a camera to your forehead and walking around with a toy gun. Also, when you're holding a gun you aren't always pointing at the exact center of the screen. I imagine you'd probably have it down a bit, and then when you're have it point to the center of the screen. Cool game on your facebook btw.

Because getting higher ground than the enemy is a thing.

You have a point, but if it doesn't effect real-life soldiers, it should work in games, right? And I meant shooting straight down.

It's really only a problem in games where you can do jump shots. Like you run and jump over a person while looking down, then shooting them as you go over them.

As much as i disagree with your username, I definitely agree with the post. I mean seriously, it cant be that hard to just move the camera to the head instead of using empty capsules and what have you...

I love how halo had the body visible when looking down, but pair that with "receiver" from wolfire and the legit visible clip exchange and pushing bullets into the clip between reloads, would be great stuff.

Arma series does it and it makes the game 10x better and would make any game 10x better.

I never noticed that in arma 2, but probably was too busy going through the entirely huge array of weapons and vehicles to stop and stare at my feet haha

I'm sorry about that, in my early days I was an ignorant JavaScripter and did not yet harness the power of C#. Now I have changed, but I have not found a way to change my username.

COD developers are very lazy I assume. I suspect that they use the same scripts for every single new game they make, with a side of new mechanic programming or maybe they do not care about the character and care more for game play.

I think its fine for most of the games to not have full body, probably just because i have used to only see hands (in most games anyway). However, i'd like to see more bodies! o_O ..and i will at least try to add legs / full body to new fps project we are about to start.

I would love to hear more how you implemented this in UFPS. I've been playing around with ufps few days now, and been thinking how it would look with camera springs. Did you post the vid somewhere?

    Poll incorrect.
    1. Necessary to constantly aims.
    2. Do not constantly aims ( visible body).
But this is irrelevant. Now almost all the games there is a mode to bear arms and aiming. The turning point in many ways became FEAR1.

Such issues do not arise, if we consider the game, and not something that on facebook. :)

Aren't your legs slightly behind you while your jumping?

As long as they're not totally obstructing your view when looking down, it wouldn't bother me.
