In the timeline editor, it would be great to be able to name tracks,
purely as an aid to editing, i often have several tracks animating the same object, e.g. one for the transform, one for the alpha channel. but since they all have the same target object it's a bit confusing

TrackAssets already have a name property. so it just needs to be exposed in the timeline editor.

this is pretty standard in audio Daw systems. and although simple, really speeds up editing

You can (re-)name the track in the inspector, but it only shows up when there is no binding for the track, or you are in asset edit mode. It is something that may be added to the track header in the near-ish future though.

Also, you can also use override tracks on animation tracks to animate different values of the same game object. The advantage is the override tracks will display their name, and the intent that they all operate on the same target is explicit.
