Creating a new 2019.1 project with the 3D with extras template:

Does no one else use this template? :p

Go the same error, but with another template (both in 2019.1 and 2019.2.0.a11

Updating to latest unity hub seems to have fixed it

Same error on Hub 2.0, wonder if it's something related to permissions. the files themselves do open with winrar. I ended up extracting the project folders from the file myself. Guess I'll run the Hub with administrator rights next time just in case, just to check...

This pointed me in the right direction. Thanks.
In my case the path was not too long but it had a space in one of the folder names. I replaced the space with a hyphen and it worked.

yes name space or to long name solves the problem.
in my case I added underscore and it prompts the error.

That URL is no longer available (404). But .. space in the file path (I wanted my repository to be on my Google Drive) was the issue for me as well.

I make my project name without space as well as a shorter path and fix the issue. I do not know if the project name without space is necessary.

After you have created your project close it and remove it from unity hub. Then move the Project folder wherever you want and after that add it back to unity hub. ( Hope it helped )

Esse erro ainda continua na versão 2.3.1, fiz tudo mencionado acima, alguém tem alguma idéia do que poderia ser?

I am also getting this error with all the template files (URP, 3D with Extra's, and the HDRP).

My Unity Hub is up to date (v2.3.1) and I even did a fresh install of the latest Unity (2019.3.13f1). The only project I can open is a normal blank 2D or 3D project but as soon as I try to select a template of some kind it fails to create the project and pulls up the
"Failed to resolve project template: Failed to decompress [C:\Program Files\Unity\Hub\Editor\2019.3.13f1\Editor\Data\Resources\PackageManager\ProjectTemplates\com.unity.template.universal-7.3.1.tgz]."

This error messages relates when trying to open a URP template but a similar message comes up with the other templates, just the ending .tgz file changes.
No other answers seem to help but I did find a post saying that it is an error that has something to do with Unity's server on their side.

Please may you advise what I can do further, I am new to Unity so please bear with me as I try get you the relevant files if applicable, as well so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

-Edit- I do believe it has something to do with the Unity Hub. Can we not just download the templates instead relying on a server whenever we want to start a project. I don't see why everything has to be locked behind a server, especially when it causes more problems than solutions.

Seems to be caused the length of the path to the new project. In my tests when the total length of the path to the root of the new project was <= 76 then the project was created OK. When the length was > 76 then I got the above error. I tried with folder names that did and did not contain spaces - the presence or absence of spaces didn't make any difference in my tests.

Unity devs: this limit is way too short.

    --EDIT--
This is with Hub 2.3.1 and Unity 2019.3.13f1.

Yes, reported. I checked that it still happens with 2019.3.14f1 before submitting.

Hi, I am using Unity Hub 2.3.1 and Unity Version 2019.3.14f1 and I am also experiencing this issue. I was able to fix it by changing the file path so it's under 76 characters, however, I am curious if anyone knows why this is an issue? Is this a bug or purposeful limit? Also, does anyone know if this is a problem with the Unity Engine or the Unity HUB?

Lastly, is there any other way for one to make a URP project from the template without the HUB?

I'v installed Unity in a new place a Folder on the Root of a new HD. and still got the error
So i tried to uninstal HUB and I managed to open Unity but can't login on the Asset Store because i need HUB.
I instal HUB. and can't create new projects. But can access the one i created without HUB.
I go go the folder where the file says it can't decompress and .. nothing. there are the 5 .tgz files but apparently HUB can't decompress them for some reason.
Event he folder that the new projects are trying to be created is in the same Root of the HD. I have no idea why is not working.

I used to have older versions of Unity (2018) and always managed to open.
but since i installed HUB and updated to the 2019.. nothing.

How are you changing the path? since it's reffering to a folder inside Unity?

Is it a bug or purposeful limit? - IMO it's a bit of both. Up until Windows 10 1607 Windows had a limit of 260 characters for the path. 1607 introduced long path support but applications must be changed to declare themselves long path aware (and may require code changes to be so). Also long path support is not enabled in Windows by default - it requires a setting to be changed using Group Policy Editor or regedit depending on Windows version. The problem is also exacerbated by the decompression process which:
    • Uses some extraordinarily long folder names (I noticed one temporary folder name that "steals" 46 of the available characters).
    • Decompresses packages to a folder (named "Temp") under your project folder.
I ran a process trace and the error occurs in Unity.exe so I believe the issue is with Unity Engine.

(A note to anyone curious about enabling long paths - it does not fix this issue.)

I think its also worth mentioning that this could be a bigger issue than just creating a new HDRP project. If you're using Windows and start working on a project where everyone else uses Macs / Linux and it has a deep folder structure with expressive folder/file names then it's possible you may not be able to work with some or all of that project due to the path length limit.

Ran into this one as well! Currently using Unity Hub 2.3.2 with the same issue. Tried creating this with several versions of Unity 2019 including 2019.3.7, 2019.2.2, and 2019.1.13 all with the same problem.

Going back even further to 2018.4.15 and things are working correctly. Pipeline is the older style LWRP instead of URP and more things are in preview but at least it works. Hopefully this gets fixed soon. Watching the thread as well

Just select a path for your project that doesn't exceed 75 characters. It will do the job ;)

    hello i had similar issue
    was easy fix
i actually imported a downloaded project so any new project i make was trying to init in download folder which is restricted.
changing the folder path below project name when creating new project solved it.

I was having the same problem...

I can confirm that the fix for now is to reduce character count for folder path when creating the project

Yep, very weird bug, reducing the folder path worked for me. I created the project on the desktop and then I moved it to the path I wanted without problems.

    Fixed!

Windows 10, Unity Hub 2.3.2, Unity 2019.4.5.f1. Creating a new URP project failed with same error. Fix was to create it with a short file path (D:\project_name) then move it after creation to the desired path.

In my case the directory name had a space then an underscore in it. Like "My Project_Name". Switching to all spaces "My Project Name" and no underscore fixed it. Wow is all I can say. With is for 2019.4.12f1

actually short path didn't resolve my problem but selection of the path to my profile which is logged on my PC solved it. Example: your account which is logged on your PC has name "myBeautifulAccount" then choose for the project location path "C:\Users\myBeautifulAccount" with some project name (probably short one... :))

i move my editor folder from
    C:\Program Files\Unity\Hub\Editor\2019.4.16f1\2019.4.16f1\Editor\ to:
    C:\Program Files\Unity\Hub\Editor\2019.4.16f1\Editor\

I just fixed it! It was because of not enough space on the SSD where I created my project.

so, i got the same problem as everyone one else does. failed to decompress bla bla bla. you know what the error is if you are on this thread. currently on Unity Hub 2.4.3 and trying to open unity version 19.4.1f1 or 20.2.7f1 or 20.3.0f1 none of these let me create a project. every single one of them gives me the same error. i tried all the above sollutions. shortening the path, relocation, the stuff about 76 char is BS because mine is 26 (starting from c:/ and even including the damn /'s) ive been struggling with this issue for a while now and its starting to annoy me.

Ran into this today myself after installing 20.3.0F1. Incredibly irritating.
