I'm using a Macbook Pro and have downloaded Unity Hub with Unity version 2020.1.4f1 with windows, macOS, iOS, Linux, and Android build support.
However, every time I try to open an existing project or create a new one I get the "failed to load window layout" error. Both options "Revert factory settings" and "Load default layout" do not work and result in the same error window opening up again. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Unity and Unity Hub but still face the same problem.
Is anyone aware of a solution? I would be grateful if you could help me out

Ok, managed to get my project running with this solution:

    1. In the projects Library folder there is a file "CurrentLayout-default.dwlt"
    2. Go into USER/Library/Preferences/Unity/Editor-5.x/Layouts/Default and open the file "Default.dwlt" in a text editor, copy all the content of it and replace the content of the "CurrentLayout-default.dwlt" with it.
    3. Open your project

I cannot create new projects anymore because of this garbage. Tried 2020.1.6 and 2020.1.7, deleting library folders and chribbes fix above. Now im afraid to close my current project. I am on WIndows 10. Another afternoon lost to Unity bugs...

This happens to me everytime when unity find a new version and the update window try to pop up.
Make a backup from the CurrentLayout-default.dwlt and replace this file until this bug is fixed....

I am having a similar issue in Unity 2020.1.6 and every workaround I attempted has failed.I cannot find the "Default.dwlt" file. Is that Mac only? If so, has there been a solution presented to Windows users with multiple screens?

Thanks, that put me on the right tracks: I just copy/pasted a CurrentLayout-default.dwlt from another project to the new one I just created (that had the bug), and went on my merry way.

You saved me quite a bit of time here :)

Thanks @chribbe ! That worked for me, on a mac. Basically replacing the content of my projects current layout file with a default one from unity, no harm. Great solution, saved me a lot of time, thanks again.

The suggested Mac solution is valid for Win 10. I've tried it for my project and it works.
    1. Find and copy the contents of "Default.wlt" in the Unity layouts folder. The default directory will be something like:
    C:\Users\[YOUR USER DIR]\AppData\Roaming\Unity\Editor-5.x\Preferences\Layouts\default
    2. Locate "CurrentLayout-default.dwlt" in your project's Library directory, open it, paste in the copied contents replacing all data and save.
    3. Open your project.

It's a frustrating bug, but this workaround has been successful for me.

Yes very nasty bug. I have scrubbed a few projects before I saw this fix. THis would be a great one to bump up to the head of the line for a fix imho :)

I'm running into this issue everytime I restart a project. I have to go into the Library folder and delete the two layout files to open it, which causes me to lose my saved window settings. Any ideas how to resolve this? I'm on 2019.4.15f1

Having the same issue with 2019.4.15f1. Says unable to load layout and to revert to defaults. Clicking on default and trying to load does not work however clicking on default then quitting and restarting seems to bring project up with default layout. I have tried the fix by going into a new projects library folder and copy/pasting the default layout.dwlt file but this only works once and then goes back to its bizarre behaviour of not being able to load the layout the next time you try and restart your project. Pretty frustrating

This is STILL not fixed in 2019.4.15 - it has been going on for months.
At least now you can click revert layout, then cancel, then run again, then revert to old layout if saved.... hmm just fix it already!

Has anyone found a solution to avoid doing the hack for every new project?

I'm on macOS Catalina with Unity 2020.1 & Unity Hub 2.42.

In my user directory under Library/Preferences/Unity/Editor-5.x/Layouts/default there is:

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 jpsilva1 staff 15096 Sep 9 01:03 2 by 3.wlt

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 jpsilva1 staff 20328 Sep 9 01:03 4 Split.wlt

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 jpsilva1 staff 18350 Sep 9 01:03 Default.wlt

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 jpsilva1 staff 5114 Sep 9 01:03 Profiler.dwlt

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 jpsilva1 staff 14548 Sep 9 01:03 Tall.wlt

    -rw-rw-r-- 1 jpsilva1 staff 15055 Sep 9 01:03 Wide.wlt

    No Default.dwlt, just Default.wlt

When I create a new project, a new file appears named LastLayout.dwlt.

Are new project's CurrentLayout-default.dwlt derived from Default.wlt in that User Library folder? If not then were does this errant data that gets into CurrentLayout-default.dwlt come from?

I've been getting this error every second time I open Unity 2020.2.1f1 (always seems to work if I quit and then retry). Manually cloning the file over seemed to fix it for good.

Having this problem still on 2020.2.3f1 I just updated to see if it would fix it but nope still having the same problem. Copy-pasting over the default layout works like above but this is still a ridiculous bug. In fact I almost terminated one of my projects because I thought it was due to an issue in Git and I had borked my git config or something...

This really should be issue numero uno that needs to be fixed...

Thanks so much for this, and thanks to @chribbe for the original solution.

Had this problem today in 2019.4.14f1 on Windows 10 Pro 64 bit. This solution resolved the issue for me.

I've been getting this error every second time I open as well. At first I got into a cycle of loading up the project, hitting the error and clicking "Load Default Layout" then quitting and reopening. Opening it again would bring me to the default layout without the error so I'd change it back to my custom layout and the next time I opened I hit the same thing.

But I realized that even if I just hit "quit" without loading default and load it again it will work. Yet as before the error window comes up after I exit Unity and come back. Nothing I've done has been able to make it go away for good. Pasting in the "default.wlt" file into the project's dwlt file doesn't work. Pasting in the layout from another project seems to work at first but after I quit and reopen it's the same. The only thing I'm suspicious of is that I get some obscure errors when I change layouts within Unity or use the "maximize on play" option which happens quite often for me. It's possible those errors are causing it to become corrupted but I can't say for sure, and it would be a huge pain to go without that feature.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm not sure what else I can do about the issue, opening it again is a workaround but it's very annoying makes me worry that the project is permanently corrupted.

EDIT: And I should note that I've pasted in both the "CurrentLayout-default" and "CurrentMaximizeLayout" files from another project and still encountered the issue.

To follow up on my attempts to fix the problem, upgrading my project to the 2020 LTS (2020.3.11f1) seemed to make it go away. No more "failed to load" error on startup, and no more editor errors on maximizing or anything like that. It's not a totally ideal solution since I'm not sure if new 2020-related bugs will pop up, but aside from some initial playmode lag that has since gone away & some shader errors that were easily solved it seems to all be fine for me. So if all else fails this should hopefully be one option for getting rid of the issue.

The only thing that helped me against this annoying bug was this:
    1. Open "Help" --> "Check for updates" in the editor menu bar
    2. Deactivate the checkbox "Check for Updates"
