as the title says, if i make a new project its ok until i try and add any basic shapes, ie a plane to use as a ground object, ive added a screen shot of what its like when the error comes up, also the error log in there too

ive uninstalled it completely and re-downloaded and installed it twice now with the same results. (running 5.3.3p1)

ive tried turning off my zonelabs firewall and anti-virus, adding exceptions in the firewall rules, mainly to make sure its not that. ive also tried disabling the network card, Ipv6 and ran it in admin mode too..

its starting to drive me up the wall because i cant think of a way to fix it....

    my system specs are

    amd A8 6600k 3.9ghz
    8 gig ram
    1tb hd
    evga nvidia GTX 970 4gig
    asus A88XM-A motherboard
    windows 10 pro build version 1511 os-build 10586.104

Has anyone got any ideas on how to sort this type of error or even point me in the right direction

Me too. I also have ZoneAlarm, don't know if that means anything. Allowing it there and also in the windows firewall seems to help somewhat, but it isn't right. It still says Failed to get socket connection from UnityShaderCompiler.exe

Had the same problem, set unity editor and shader compiler to "super" trustworthy and it works now.

EDIT: uh, the problem now reappeared after a reboot. Even with ZA turned off. What the...

After looking at your screen grab I went back into zone alarm and looked at the allow list for programs and went into options (pic added) and checked all of the tick boxes for unity and the shader,up to now it seems to be working as a work around

Can you all send in bug reports with all the critical details and get me the report numbers. This isn't "my department" and seems related to 3rd party issues, but having the details in a report will help a lot.

I'm having this same problem and don't know what to do. I've tried adding the exceptions but it just plain doesn't seem to work 90% of the time.

It would be nice if Unity could contact ZoneAlarm to release a patch that fix this: Failed to get socket connection from UnityShaderCompiler.exe shader compiler problem

in my honest opinion, zone alarm is picking up the communications between the shader and the main unity exe and making them as suspicious and kill the connections straight away

Yeah it seems to be so :/
On my Pc i found a .exe of a older ZoneAlarm version (version 141_011_000). I deinstalled the newest version and then i installed this old version and it works with Unity, no issues or anything else. What have they changed in the newest version, that it dont works well?

Hi, guys. Thanks for sending bug reports. I have tested Zone Alarm free on my PC. When I launched the editor, it became very laggy and unresponsive, also got the very same error message in the console. ZA support suggested to uninstall firewall and run their clean utility tool http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/support/download/CLEAN.exe . Then again, install their product, because somehow installation might have got corrupted. But this is not the case and reinstall doesn't help at all.

I would suggest you all go to https://www.zonealarm.com/forums/forum.php and spread the word about Unity and Zone Alarm incompatibility, because if you're free user, there is no additional support or settings to set for such issue.

I would suggest what @Kazimieras has suggested:
If there is any additional support from ZoneAlarm for Extreme Security users, I'd suggest that as well.

IMHO, if a security application is finding false positives in an approved and safe application, then this seems to be a problem with the security application.

Unity is just working with no issues when I use a older version. With the newest version it doesnt work well and you get this error. So they have done anything in the latest version that blocks Unity.

_Krafter_, if you're paid user, then you should contact ZA support. They may have some ideas how to fix this issue, because paid ZA versions should have more settings.
Contact support through live chat: http://www.zonealarm.com/support/ (icon on the right bottom corner).

I have also been bitten by this ZoneAlarm Free bug. I had to uninstall ZA to get Unity v5.3.4 to run on my ASUS G752VL laptop. Symptoms were the above noted errors, plus slow UI response and broken graphics in the scene shaded view window.

I hope they get this fixed soon. I rely on ZA.

I'll be honest, ZoneAlarm was screwing up Unity, it was breaking/massively slowing down my SourceTree, and was messing with other things, and the options to turn things "Off" in ZoneAlarm just plain do not work. I switched to BitDefender instead.

Hey, I figured out a fix after reading this. I updated zonealarm still didn't work. So I turned off zonealarm application control before starting unity. Turned it back on after unity was running and messed with shaders and materials. Everything works fine.
