We just updated to Unity version 5.3.4f1 and our project broke somehow. Since we opened the project, the console is spammed with the error "Failed to change file flags for 'Assets/...." for every single asset in the game!

We're not sure about this, no idea what to do. Tried looking for a solution but can't seem to find anything similar and searching the errno did not help either.

Anyone got any idea what might have caused this? And perhaps hat we could do to fix it?

    Thanks!

Most likely a permissions or ownership issue. Have a look at these files and make sure they're owned and writeable by your username.

Thanks for the reply, I tried looking into that. The unity project has full read/write permissions for all users and we're logged in as an Admin.

P.S. We're working on a Mac right now.

I'm having the same problem on my Mac. Does not seem to actually affect anything, it's just very annoying.

Open terminal. Change directory to a folder which contains folder "Editor". You can find this by a look at the path in error message.
    Example:
Failed to change file flags for 'Assets/blabla/Editor/Plugins.meta'

You need to go to '$PROJECT_ROOT/Assets/blabla/'
    $PROJECT_ROOT - path to project
In my example, my PROJECT_ROOT will be "/Users/admin/UnityProjects/Project"

    commands in terminal

    cd /Users/admin/UnityProjects/Project/Assets/blabla
    sudo chown -R $(whoami) Editor

Write your password and that's all!
You need to execute these commands once.

I just tried you solution to see if that would work, but it still show all of the errors I even twitted to unity about it but sadly no response. I dont know if its going to effect anything but the spamming of the errors are quite annoying https://twitter.com/SylensEdits/status/951781947566710784

errno: 13 is Permission Denied. Can you run as Administrator (on Windows) or run Unity as root from a terminal on Mac. Can you copy the entire project to a new folder/another machine? Does it give you the same error?

I am having the same problem on macOS. I am trying the beta version and this message is spamming the console. I didn't notice any other issue, but as said before, it is annoying. I thought it was a permission issue because I uninstalled the previous version from the main HD and installed this version (2018.1.0b3) in a second one.

I've just experienced this problem on 2018.1.0b4, installed from packages (because the installer failed to download its config file), on a new project, led to spam of this form...
Assertion failed: Failed to change file flags for '/Applications/Unity_2018.1.0b4/Unity.app/Contents/Resources/PackageManager/Editor/com.unity.modules.accessibility/package.json.meta'. errno: 13
...on every load of the project.

A single run of Unity as root
    sudo "/Applications/Unity_2018.1.0b4/Unity.app/Contents/MacOS/Unity"
seems to have got rid of it it.

As Sintezz suggested earlier, this worked for me in Unity 2018.2 beta MacOS.

    In directory:
    /Applications/Unity/Unity.app/Contents/Resources/PackageManager

    Run:
    sudo chown -R $(whoami) Editor

    Hi bowserscastle
Sorry for my ignorance since I am new in Mac( I am working with Unity 2018.2 beta) and I do not know how I have to do what did here

    In directory:
    /Applications/Unity/Unity.app/Contents/Resources/PackageManager

    Run:
    sudo chown -R $(whoami) Editor

For it, Could you explain me step by step how I do it?
    Thanks for your time

Hi @castana1962 - no need to apologize. We're all learning together.

    1. Open the Terminal app
    2. type: cd /Applications/Unity/Unity.app/Contents/Resources/PackageManager
(the cd command stands for: "change directory")
    3. then type: sudo chown -R $(whoami) Editor
    Hope that helps!

    Here's what you do Castana:

    1. Open Terminal (found in Applications -> Utility)
    2. In Terminal, copy and paste this line

    cd /Applications/Unity/Unity.app/Contents/Resources/PackageManager

Then hit ENTER. cd means to 'change directory', so you're basically changing the Terminal's directory to this file path.

    3. Copy and paste this line

    sudo chown -R $(whoami) Editor

Hit ENTER and it will ask for your password. Type in the password to your macbook login and press ENTER one last time.

    4. Close Terminal. The issue should now be fixed!

Now in my situation, I didn't have the exact same file path as the example above. Mine was

    /Applications/Unity/Unity.app/Contents/Resources/PackageManager/BuiltInPackages

    instead of

    /Applications/Unity/Unity.app/Contents/Resources/PackageManager/Editor

So I had to change directory into PackageManager (step 2), and then use

    sudo chown -R $(whoami) BuiltInPackages

    Hope this helps!

Edit: Check bowsercastle's response for a much shorter solution :)

my case on Mac: Unity 2018.2 after I change project folder name.
Assertion failed: Failed to change file flags for '/Applications/Unity_2018.1.0b4/Unity.app/Contents/Resources/...

    1> open terminal:
2> type command: (move to folder)
    cd /Applications/Unity/Unity.app/Contents/
    3> type command: (change permission)
    sudo chown -R $(whoami) Resources

    It worked.

Thank you very much. Though I have no idea what I just did, that also worked for me. Similar to justinkmai my troubles were with "BuiltInPackages".

The sort of embarrassing mistake that happens over and over with Unity. Such a shame.

Hi bowserscastle - After doing what you suggested in the Terminal app, the error disappeared. I added a UI Panel to my project, and the errors reappeared. I guess you just have to live with these errors.? I'm using a Mac with Unity 2018.2.3f1. Thank you!
