I've noticed sometimes text seems to snap to pixels a bit too much, especially at lower resolutions, which can look bad with curved characters because they look straight in some parts. Example below (right is with extra padding)

The Extra Padding seems to improve it, so I was wondering why it's not enabled by default? It looks fine on higher resolutions too, even though it's less noticeable. Does it hurt performance?

Having tightly fitted geometry is more efficient as you are drawing less pixels but unless the text is very large where you have lots of empty space wasting fill rate, the performance overhead is not really measurable. So for small text like you have it, it is totally fine to have Extra Padding enabled.
