I'm getting following error message when trying to run a Unity 5 project with oculus rift dk1:
"Unable initialize VR. Please make sure the runtime is installed and running and a VR display is attached."
When I run the game with OVRPlayerController in a simple scene, on the screen it says: "VR DISABLED" , and the view is not stereoscopic (just normal single camera view).
What is there to be done to get VR enabled? What is runtime?

Thanks for the reply. Now I know what runtime means. It was already installed on the machine (I didn't know it) and the same error message still occurs.

You have to run the OVRServer from the Oculus/Agent/ folder to make it work.

I found OVRServer_x64.exe from oculus/Service folder, but running it just flashes command prompt and the same error still occurs when running the game.

Bumping this. I have the same issue. Have been working with the SDK in Unity 4. But my DK1 doesn't seem to work in Unity 5. Installed the runtime. Using the newest Unity 5 integration.

Old compiled projects work well. Opened an older Unity 4 project with an older integration and that works as well. So the issue seems to be related to Unity 5 and/or new integration.

    Any ideas?

I'm getting following error message when trying to run a Unity 5 project with oculus rift dk2 :
"Unable initialize VR. Please make sure the runtime is installed and running and a VR display is attached."
    I'm using Oculus Unity Integration-0.6

    Any ideas?

You can't use the sdk & runtime 0.6.0.1 with Unity 5 and 5.1.1f1. It took me about 3 days banging my head until I figured it out. Here's what you do:

On the oculus page, select PC in the downloads section and you can choose older versions of the sdk, runtime, and unity integration. You will want to choose the 0.4.4 of all three of these.
    Oculus: DK1
    Unity 5.1.1f1

In oculus configuration utility: In display mode, check dk1 support and "extend to hmd"

You will notice that you can utilize the "direct to rift" option after building it. Also, hold shift when double-clicking the direct to rift exe to change settings. It will not know which screen(1 or 2) that you are using. It will be more convenient to switch the side of your oculus in your OS settings in the long run. Enjoy!

Thanks, You are my hero: 0.4.4 works. I'd never guessed myself. I've tried 0.8, 0.7. 0.6, 0.5 and I thought it's already too much %)
