Really who locked that thread without any explanation?
It was a nice and interesting discussion. No flame wars, or yelling. And then it's suddenly locked..

Or does the forum rules now prohibit such discussions?

It's a shame it was locked. Everyone in the thread was being extremely well behaved and it had only a slight hint of sinking to the depths of previous UE4 discussion.

Yes I don't get that either.
Since when is talking about competition an issue here, as long as it is a fine discussion?

Really who locked that? Does the name starts with H and ends with... ippocoder? Because he was in that thread.

Anything that talks to much about a competing engine gets locked. Ultimately this is a support forum for discussing Unity topics from Unity users, paid for by Unity Technologies.

If you want to talk about UE4 or promote the UE4 engine, then go to the UE4 forums.

And expect a lock here soon. Discussion about other engines just does not belong on this forum.

You're obviously not too long here. Because it was never an issue here as long the discussion was civil.

You really don't need to tell others what they have to do and what not :)
I've been using Unity since the mac only days and working with it on a daily basis. That doesn't mean we should not talk about other things that happen in the game developer space. There are a lot other non-Unity topics here that still related to game development and are not locked for no reason.

I'm shocked it has lasted as long as it has.

Yes, I recall a very huge Unreal 4 thread that existed for a good while. At one point though we had so many threads spawning regarding Unreal 4 that I think the administration got sick of it.

I wasn't really talking about the game engine. Focused on the marketing campaign. I couldn't care less about the other engine. If I wanted to use it well... I'd be using it. But examining the sales funnel of both sides and the marketing can be beneficial if a person has an interest in that sort of thing. And anyone who is an Indy game developer with dreams of making money probably should have that interest.

Its been that way on every thread on marketing of UE4, or the UE4 for the last six months. Its consistent enough to call it policy. I can't speak for a time before that.

You seem to confuse marketing with a discussion.
I didn't see people over there doing actively marketing for Epic. In fact it was a diverse talk which also tried to shed light on the reasons behind Epic's move. I found that rather interesting.
To kill such discussion because it talks about:
    UE4
is rather silly. There was a time where moderators said it is absolutely ok to talk about such stuff as long it remains civil. And the threads you've mentioned got mostly locked because it ended in flame-wars, or there was nothing new added.

But obviously this isn't the case anymore. If this threads get locked, I'm fine with that. I guess I have my answer already.

The thread was about Unity, and how the announcement affected Unity. There was no discussion about UE4 other than as a comparison. It is sad that such this is cut out. I think it was an emotional response myself.

No, because it talks about the PRICE. :p

Then I apologize. I was only referring to the post above me. Silly reason to close the thread. There was no asking that Unity lower there price or anything like that. The funny thing is that this is an internal forum. It isn't going to make anyone quit Unity or not buy it. Ignoring facts or hiding opinions really worries me. I need Unity to be around for a very long time.

I do think this happened because of a well meaning, but overzealous moderator. ;) I certainly don't want to make anyone uncomfortable.

Does come across as a little insecure. Not saying that was the motivation, but it could definitely give people that impression.

I was about to post the exact same thing. It does come accross as insecure. It's like Unity mods think "If it's not posted on the unity forums, maybe people will not find out about it (because if they do we're in trouble?)"
It's not like it isn't all over the internet you know. We would just like to exchange opinions on the matter with fellow Unity devs.

Hi, when a moderator locks a thread, you don't open a thread about it. The reason it was locked was actually last few posts creating a tipping point of discussing prices all over again. We don't want to go back to those days.

In addition not much more needed to be said? its a nice initiative and if you want to give it a go do so. Unity has no plans to do it, so nothing more needs to be said. Being polite isn't the only way to avoid thread lock. Constantly comparing engine prices is a good way to get it locked.

This thread is locked because we always lock threads which are discussing moderator actions. If you have a complaint about a moderator, contact support@unity3d.com or PM Aurore / Sara and they will look into it :)

ps. If it was insecure, it'd have been deleted, not remain as a record for all to see. Oh, and moderators argue with Unity like everyone else. Moderators are end users and are not paid, nor are moderators fanboys or shrills. Moderators care about a thriving community and tend to be active enough to do the horrible job of clearing up spam so you don't have to see it.
