Entering Play Mode sets Game View scale to 2x (macOS, 2018.3)

I know I ran into this issue before and can't recall if I resolved it or if it was fixed in a subsequent release (and now has worked its way back in.

When I enter Play Mode, the scale for the Game View gets bumped up to 2x. When I reset it back to 1x, it'll stay there until I enter Play Mode again. This happens every single time I enter Play Mode and it drives me crazy.

It only happens on my Mac (Mojave, 10.14.2) and latest Unity (2018.3.0f2). Running the same Unity version on Windows 10 does not do this.

I could have sworn I read a few threads about this before, but can't find any of them now. The closest I could find was this Answers question with no resolution.

Edit: It does seem to happen more consistently if Unity was launched via the Hub. If I just open Unity directly, it doesn't appear to be happening. Very strange...

I'm also experiencing this issue with the same setup as yours, it's pretty frustrating. If you set "Low Resolution Aspect Ratios" on it doesn't happen, but then everything looks pixelated. Hoping they patch this soon...

Doesn't that also set the minimum scale to 1.5x or something?

This has to be a bug they're aware of, as it was happening before and was patched. At least, I'm almost positive it was...

Yep, every time I enter Play Mode it jumps to 1.5x on a 4K monitor if the scale is <1.5x
    Incredibly infuriating...

@aj-fix @Raptor42 You guys launching from the Hub, or straight into the Editor?

    @Schneider21 straight into the Editor.
I'm actually running Unity on Windows 10 and get this problem as well so I don't think it's a platform-related issue.
Strangely enough, when I start a new project it works fine. Hmmm...

Fascinating. I work on the same project on both my MacBook and Win 10 PC, and have only ever had it occur on the Mac. I also use the Mac's built in display, whereas the PC has two monitors, so not sure if screen real estate for the Game View has any impact.

@Schneider21 Are you still getting this issue? I have the same setup as you.

On play, the game tab goes straight to 2x.

    Mac - Mojave, 10.14.2
    Unity - 2018.3.0f2

I've been launching Unity straight from the Task Bar since posting here (not Unity Hub) and don't see the error anymore. If I launch from the Hub, it still happens.

Same thing, Unity 2018.3.4f1, MacBook Pro 2017. Every time I press Play Mode Game View scales to 2x - very annoying. Only "Maximize on Play" and "Low Resolution Aspect Ratios" helps. "Low Resolution Aspect Ratios" sets 2x Scale as smaller value for Scale Slider - I guess this is why it fixes issue.

Thanks for the response @Schneider21 . By the task bar, do you mean the menu bar at the top? Or do you mean the Dock (usually at the bottom)?

I tried both using the menu bar (it has the Unity Hub icon) to start Unity and that did not work, as well as the Dock which I opened Unity (not Unity Hub), and that did not work as well.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Whoops, yeah, I meant the Dock. Weird that it didn't work for you... The issue itself has always been difficult to pin down, and it seems even the workarounds are as well...

Ugh. It started doing it again. 2018.3.5f1, regardless of whether I launch it from the Hub or Dock. Every time I enter Play mode.

    Oh, Unity...

I know this question has been around for a long time, but I have found a solution, hoping to help someone encounter a similar situation.
Step 1: Adjust the scale to the lowest level
Step 2: Turn on Maximize On Play mode and enter play mode. Now the screen will not scale again.
Step 3: Exit play mode and turn off Maximize On Play.
Now the problem has been fixed. It works for me, hopefully this is the right solution

Not sure if this will help. When selecting the aspect ratio, uncheck 'Low resolution aspect ratios' and the scale will default to '1'.
