    Hello there.

I always backup my stuff manually, I just '7-zip ultra' the whole shebang at the end of the day and copy it to an external device (which is a redundant backup device) however, I'd like something better... I mean, something that backups the thing far more frequently and automatically, I don't need integration with webservices like google drive or dropbox but that's a plus, as long as it allows me to also backup my stuff locally.

Any recommendations? It seems you can't just use one of these 'generic' backupers because unity produces a lot of temporary/cache data that isn't actually important to backup and only takes space and bandwidth.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you in advance.

At a minimum, you should use version control. I use git (see this thread) to Dropbox, but subversion (good tutorial here) is a solid, simple version control system, and here's a tutorial for mercurial.

On top of that, it's a good idea to set up automated, incremental backups. Here's an article on good, free backup software. Incremental means it only adds changes to the backup. If you're syncing with Drive or Dropbox, this will make your sync a lot faster, especially as your project gets really big.

@TonyLi suggestions are good and thorough. I'll also throw in Bvckup 2 as a great, simple, very flexible general purpose backup software.

    As to this:
You should only back up the Assets and ProjectSettings folders in your Unity project. The rest is automatically generated if it's not there.

@TonyLi I was afraid someone would pop in and tell things about version control :) hehehe

@shaderop That software seems great but I certainly wouldn't pay 20 bucks for a software like that...

Thank you for the suggestions guys... I'm going to try mercurial for backing up codes which is more important... arts can be backed up every 24hs, no problem at all.
