I'm developing on a 2013 MacPro and, for a while now (since maybe v5.3 or so), I've been encountering an issue with the editor.

While playing my project through the editor, the screen will go blank at random. It looks as if the camera stops rendering. Once blank, the viewport doesn't come back to normal unless I switch from the "Game" tab to the "Scene" tab and switch back again.

I don't have that problem once I run a compiled project; I only see this in the editor. It's not gamebreaking but it is annoying as hell.

Does this happen in all projects or just a particular one? Does the editor log have any warnings or errors?

By the "editor log", are you referring to the Console? As in, whenever or not Unity found something odd with my scripts? If that's the case, then no; it doesn't display any warnings or errors.

As far as projects are concerned, I'm not entirely sure. It doesn't seem to happen in another project but I can't say I've done extensive tests. It happens frequently enough but it doesn't happen all the time.

If it is something wrong with that one project, how would I go about fixing it?

Its hard to say if its specific to the project if you have not spent much time testing other projects. Do you have any custom editor scripts running?
Does it happen in a particular scene?
Grab the log file next time it happens.

None of the scripts in my project(s) are for "editor use only", if that's what you mean.

After a few tests, I suppose it is isolated to one project. I don't understand why the camera would go blank in the editor when it's running fine once it's compiled. Like I said, I can "restore" the camera in the editor by switching to the "Scene" tab, select the camera, and switch back to the "Game" tab.

I grabbed the Editor.log... how do I distinguish the warnings and/or errors from all the text?

    It's not just you.

    Unity 5.4.1p2 has a fix.

I have hit the problem with the scene view and game view periodically stopping rendering for the last few days (Unity 5.4.1f1, macOS 10.12 Sierra) and just rendering the default editor background colour. The game continues to run in the background if it's playing. The tabs also stop working (can't be dragged, etc) and have to be closed, reopened from the menu, and reattached to the workspace.

I filed a bug (#834263) but without a project or steps to reproduce it's fairly hand-wavey :) Slightly differently than the other thread, I didn't experience this problem in OS X 10.10.5, only on macOS 10.12.
