When ever i create a project (which can be either 2D or 3D or 3D with presets) and open the project i am greeted with a black editor screen and the only thing i can see is the toolbar at the top of the screen. I've tried different editions of Unity; Unity Personal and Unity Pro and they both have the same problem. I've tried versions, 2018.4.17f1 (LTS), 2019.2.21f1, 2019.3.3.f1 and Unity 2020.1.0a24 (Alpha). I have also updated my GPU driver (Game Ready 442.19 Driver) by using the Nvidia GeForce Experience program and updated my chipset driver. Downgraded Nvidia GPU driver version to 441.87 (from latest which was 442.19) and checked with friend and he has exact version of GPU driver and his works but mine doesn't.

THE ONLY VERSION TO WORK IS 2017.4.37f1 (LTS). I kinda dont want to be restricted to only this version as the newer ones are far better.

    Current PC Specs:
    CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 2600X
GPU - ASUS STRIX RTX 2070
    RAM - Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3000 2 x 8GB
    OS: Windows 10 Pro

The attached picture shows the black screen as soon as project is opened: Screenshot (3).png

    Hi @adampaul783,

Seeing your specs It's definitely not lack of hardware resources, but more likely some driver issue. As you have updated to the latest GPU driver version, have you tried to downgrade to some earlier driver see what happens? I'd also check that all chipset drivers etc. are correctly installed etc. Try to boot to safe mode and see if you get Unity started correctly. Try disabling all sorts software you have running on your system (kill tasks with Task Manager) and see if you get any change. But I'd try first different driver and safe mode boot.

I'd check the editor log looking for differences between the Unity version which works fine, and ones which fail. There may be some error recorded there. I'd try launching a problem 2018.x version directly instead of using Unity Hub to see if the Hub has anything to do with it (Unity versions prior to 2019.1.0 can be installed and launched without even Unity Hub installed). Also check if you have any kind of overlay software, remote desktop software, output capture software, or anything which may be inserting itself into how things are rendered and displayed to the monitor. Lastly I'd check that you don't have some other GPU active in your machine, like an extra video card or onboard GPU, which might be confusing Unity as to which one it is supposed to use.

If I still couldn't figure it out, I'd narrow down further where the change went into Unity which broke it on your machine (lots of stuff went into Unity between 2017 LTS and 2018 LTS. If you were able to figure out the specific version in which things break, you might get an idea from its release notes what did it, and that might lead to either a better work around idea or at least good information you could send to Unity in a bug report (it is very helpful for QA and devs when they can be told in X.x version it worked fine, and in X.x+1 version it breaks, so they can reproduce it and quickly narrow down what check in broke it since it is one of them that went specifically into X.x+1).

Software which displays itself within another application's window as if it were part of that application are often referred to as an Overlay. For example the somewhat popular voice communication software called Mumble will display everyone in your chat room inside the game you're playing as if the game itself was displaying the information. This kind of feature can sometimes cause problems.

    https://wiki.mumble.info/wiki/Overlay

I'd shut off anything like this, or any remote viewing software (primarily where you're sharing your screen instead of viewing someone else's), and see if it fixes the problem. If any of them installs a Windows driver, I'd try removing it, etc, etc.

Thanks for this, my editor was going all black when I had anything selected (game window was fine) but resetting panels to default (top right drop-down for anyone looking) fixed it.
