Hey there, everyone! Just wanted to stop in and mention my game, Dusty Sprocket! Dusty's a side-scrolling steampunk RTS currently in development. We've made the jump from our own proprietary engine to Unity and we couldn't be happier! I am so amazed at how quickly Unity can pump out prototype after prototype. If only I could go back in time and slap myself into using Unity sooner... :?

Anyways, look for a lot more updates here soon. If you want to check out day-to-day progress, you can always check out www.dustysprocket.com

Also, here's a little video I created that shows off the art direction I'm going for.

    Thanks for lookin'!

The environment work you've done so far looks great, very polished.

This looks absolutely lovely. Not much of gameplay seeable unfortunately, but the artdesign is heartwarmingly stunning.

This is beautiful. Really. The cutscene tests are looking amazing. And the level select is too beautiful.

    Thanks so much, everyone!

Yeah, not too much in the way of gameplay videos yet, but hopefully I'll put up a few soon explaining a bit about our unique approach to RTS's! :D

Sure have! It's a really fun game! Totally love the art style! The genre works really well on the Wii too!

Side-Scrolling RTS's are pretty hard to find, but I think the earliest is a little game from 1984 called 'Rescue Raiders'. Pretty brilliant for its time! I also did the artwork for a 2006 side-scrolling RTS game called 'Steam-Brigade'. It's great that side-scrolling RTS's are getting more and more attention these days, especially with the release of 'Swords and Soldiers'. I think the genre has a HUGE amount of potential.

Anyways, hopefully I'll be back soon with a video or two featuring the gameplay. It's definitely a break from the traditional RTS gamestyle, and quite the mashup of genres! Stay tuned! :D

    Thanks, Knives and Maker!

Hey there, Dylan! Glad to help! I think Swords and Soldiers is definitely the most polished out there. There's also Patapon, which probably qualifies under the polished side-scrolling RTS banner. :)

    Thanks, Sinu!

Animating the transitions between levels has been a huge addiction for me. And that's just stage 1! The game has me going through a large forest fire, and scaling a bubbling volcano. I hope to capture those scene changes in the level select menu itself. We'll see! :)

Oh man, this looks so beautifull, thanks for showing us!
Do you have any timeframe in mind?
Anyway I will keep an eye on this one, I'm sure it will be an inspiration to many.

    Regards, Robert

Absolutely loving this. Even showed a friend and read the whole blog so far. As a digital painter and designer, I absolutely love the idea of making art come to live through games, and yours does a fantastic job of it. I'd love to see how you are implementing the characters (2d planes, 3d models, etc). A assume the parallax-scrolling background is based off of the level width, scrolling a percentage as you advance? Keep up the inspirational work.

Thanks, Robert! No timeline I can announce. Look for it sometime next year though!

And thank you, David! Glad you're enjoying the blog! Perhaps sometime I'll compile a video of me working on a level from scratch. Then all the mysteries will be revealed!

Awesome art style. There are a bunch of "side-scrolling RTS's" on Armor Games. I prefer them to "real" RTS's, truthfully.

Probably a lot easier on pathfinding, huh? ;)

In your level select, are you fading between multiple lighting schemes?

Hey there, Twitch! In the level select I key frame every time of day and fade between them. But everything is tinted by hand. Shadows/Highlights/trees/mountains/forests/bushes, I tint each one individually to correspond to the level it represents. It's a big job, but I believe it pays off!

And thanks, Dele! There's going to be another video preview tomorrow morning at 9AM PST. Enjoy!
