I suppose it isn't entirely out of the realm of possibility. The Dreamcast ran on a modified version of Windows CE, after all. Granted, that is quite old compared to Unity's first instance of Windows support. (which I believe was XP) At the time the Dreamcast was on it's way out, Unity was in its infancy, and only available for the Mac.

I've thought for some time that someone should come along and create a Dreamcast clone using a standard DVD drive. The Dreamcast was just a nifty little system that died off far too young.

There may be enough documentation in the still-active Dreamcast hobbyist scene to make a Unity port possible, but I wouldn't hold my breath. While a neat idea, it makes zero financial sense. I could only see it being a labor of love from an internal Unity team.

I guess I should clarify that I am not joking nor is this a late April fools joke.

@RichardKain - Yeah it would make zero sense financially but It would be awesome and yeah the Dreamcast died off far too young.

@BrandyStarbrite - I know right. I personally would love to see this happen with unity :)

@LaneFox - The Dreamcast is far from dead.

The community is active still and it is going to see another game release for it this year. You can check it out here.

If I remember correctly, isn't the team behind Elysian Shadows releasing their engine to the public?

Even if it is, this is 2D/2.5d engine at best, not true 3D one. And since ES seems to be a jRPG, engine will probably be genre-specific as well.

Yeah, probably won't happen (just like PS2 port won't happen), so it'd be better to ask for support from other engines which have sourcecode available, such as Urho3D, Godot or UE4 (though last one would probably need some hefty optimizations).

Damn, I guess I'll have to complain about splash screen wording, dark ui, refunds, moderators, unity, and now lack of dreamcast support. Outrageous.

    You would be correct :)

@hippocoder - Not complaining at all. Just made a request. Not sure how it could be seen as complaining.

@darkhog - Hey thanks for the tip.
I know someone who is working with Urho3d and making their own engine with it.

@Andy Touch - Thanks for the info. Guess I should put my effort elsewhere.

I do remember the dream cast, man, playing Unreal Tournament on it was so awesome online. I remember the exact store isle I was on, exactly which store, exactly where on the shelf it was located. I don't know why I remember stupid stuff like that, but I do. I remember begging my mom to let me have it loll.

I think you wouldh more luck with an open source game engine.

I am imagining some open source engine which takes your scene setup, builds to some intermediate representation, then provided plugin support for converting that intermediate rep into a platform specific representation.

With somessome restrictions (materials, shader, polygon counts, etc.) It could be possible to build for dreamcast.

Not sure about the existing open source game engines. May be feasible with one of them

Thanks to many major content creation apps supporting their own editor extension languages nothing prevents you from simply writing a script that serializes your assets to a custom format. Unity has a very extensive framework for extending the editor.
