    What version(s) of Unity?
New and empty project, or existing one?

Although issues with Mx Apple chips are not unheard of, with a completely new system behaving this way I wouldn't totally rule out defective hardware. Unity may be the first app that's actually putting a load on the system. Try to see if you encounter other issues with demanding software and run a system check (OS X has something for this built-in via boot hotkeys).

I think Unity requires a good Nvidia or AMD graphics card and Mac computers don't have it.

Just to nip this in the bud, this is inane and false. The Unity editor runs perfectly fine on GPUs from Intel and Apple, including my M1 Max.

The M2 Ultra is very new, but I'd be surprised if it was different enough from M2 Max for this to be a hardware support issue specifically with the CPU in Unity. Looking at the crash log, I would disconnect any external peripherals and stress-test my RAM as a first step to triage.

My M1 MacMini has had zero trouble running Unity. It's not a fast experience because I deliberately went with a model that had the base M1 to have a min spec machine for testing but it's not at all the case that it's being held back by being custom silicon.

Thanks for the info. Could we connect an external graphics card to a Mac with M1 chip, to run Unreal Engine 5 smoothly?

I don't know if there are any complexities with the external graphics card, but you can for sure run it without an external graphics card.

Multiple Unity versions, multiple existing projects across multiple targets. Tried projects copied over from an pc, with library folder etc and projects with only source pulled from GitHub. Always seems to happen once you try and interact with the editor.

Do you have any external devices connected? Kernel panics are usually 3rd party driver-related. The next most likely culprit is RAM, which might also be indicated by the "mismatched swapID's" error. If you really suspect the CPU, I'd head to a macOS community like MacRumors (or, if it was any other time, Reddit) to find other new M2 Ultra owners who would be willing to install Unity for a second data point. If you have an Apple Store nearby, they might help you try it on another machine, as well.

I don't have kernel panics, but I had a lot of regular crashes before I added "-force-gfx-st" at the project command line. Maybe it will help?

Just to add to what others have said, I have an M2Max/38/96 and have zero problems like that. I will admit I would have hoped build times/compile time would have been crazy fast… not. The are faster, but not over the top. But no hangs / crashes (yet)

Do you use Rider? I've got almost exactly the same as you, and have noticed intensely faster operation of Rider. As though their Silicon coding has transformed it from a Java app to a C app, it's stunningly fast, and finally feels more like using Sublime in terms of performance and responsiveness. Where I'd always put up with all the little hangs and hitches of Rider because of its features, now it's all win.

OK, new project, 3D template, 2022.3.2f1. I got as far as opening project settings before it kernel panicked.

Unplugged my webcam and microphone, fired up the empty project again, barely lasted 5 seconds before rebooting.

I'll try some meaty UE5 projects next, and do some hardware tests, just to be sure. I've got Parallels going with Win11, so I'm planning to use that until this mess is sorted. I won't hold my breath.

Everything runs fine under Parallels. Imported a commercial VR title project, built addressables and squirted out a 1GB apk without issue. UE5.2 is downloading!

So this morning I tried 2023.1.0b20. I managed to create a new project, install an asset from the store, then I changed the layout...and BOOM.

@Unity any idea when this will be fixed? Thank you :)

Would like to hear more comparison between UE5, Unity LTS, maybe even Godot while we are at it :)

Just so people are aware, unless you specifically optimized for M1/M2 Ultra via Metal, it is quite possible for your game to run much worse on an Ultra. I don't know why, but it is often worse than an M1 Max.

Good find. I suspect Metal has "bridge" communication optimisations built in so that it gets across and spreads load well.

This is why I asked if Unity had done any testing with the prior generation of M1 chips, as that's basically the same in principle, two chips bridged.

    Also, thank you!

Having discovered the speed advantages of an m2 Max for all sorts of things, I was going to pull the pin on a maxed out Ultra Studio for Unity work... in the hope that it'd speed me up, too. I'll hold off for a bit, and make do for a while.

    Big thanks for this insight!

And @bitinn thank you very much too. This further clarifies why to go into a holding pattern on another purchase.

OK, good news! Support offered some forum links to previous solutions, and somewhere down the rabbit hole I found this:
    • open Unity Hub
    • click the 3 dots to the right of the project you want to add the flag to
    • click Advanced Project Settings
    • add the flag -force-metal and click done
    • your project will now open Unity in "Metal" mode
...which, from my limited testing, seems to work!

@Unifikation you can always run Windows Unity under Parallels in the short term.

I haven't closed the ticket out just yet, but this certainly looks encouraging.

Few years back I bought a m1 mini. Haven't tried with rosetta, but silicon version crashes... a... freaking... lot... especially if I have vsync active in editor. Will simply lock up, showing the spinning wheel of death with no other option by force quitting. Can happen minutes after starting up, and I've never avoided it for longer sessions.

Recently bought a m1 air to use on the go. It should be basically the same machine, but for some reason it just doesn't lock up.

These are "work" machines, so there's very little else installed; just blender, photoshop etc. The mini was unstable from day 1, with almost nothing other than unity installed.

Im tempted reinstalling osx on the mini, just to see if it would resolve the issue. Both machines are updated to the latest version though.

It's also debilitating the editor's possible improvements via usage of more cores and more threads. It's 'go slower to crash less often" when time is priceless.

Found something interesting. If I open Blender, and do a primitive amount of work in it (sorry about the pun) and then go back to Unity... in Play Mode, Unity is TWICE AS PERFORMANT in the GPU side of things. Perhaps even a little faster than that.

Nope. I have no explanation for this.

After removing geometry shader support, the most powerful and easy to implement graphics tool human kind has come up with, i no longer consider Mac as a game development or playing environment, for desktop at least.

I was 100% going to get a Mac laptop before i knew this information, now just stick to what Unity and desktop gaming was made for, Windows 10.

    oh interesting :)

But the issue is not Unity itself, it is Apple that moves away from gaming in general, with decisions to not support major features. I was in bit of a shock when first realized Geometry Shaders just did not run in Mac, cant even imagine why would remove such a feature.

After having worked with Geometry shaders, i have to say are the by miles easiest to implement most powerful graphical feature in modern hardware. There is absolutely nothing equal also, even if try any amount of time to replicate when can be done in the Geometry stage, possibly would not be achievable, or vastly slower.

And the complexity to do something remotely similar is exponentially bigger and harder to implement.
