Something you can always come back to, something that you might never really start or finish, but it holds all those awesome features inside of it that you have ever dreamed of?(or a large part of it?)

I have my dragonlands :D an mmorpg that has no humans, where the world is populated by dragons and dragon relatives only, where you can build cities, a procedural magic system, smart AI, huge customization options, large beautiful landscapes filled with lots and lots to discover and on top of that no PVP :p

and before anyone asks: I do plan on trying to make it, but in first place it's my can of insane ideas and features that I use when I'm getting bored of another project, to spark my imagination, go crazy and simply have an idea outlet for those moments when I'm too frustrated with programming :D and it's actually helping me to focus on learning further, because it gives that kind of "I wanna be an astronaut" feeling.

So do you have something like that? Feel like sharing your crazy ideas here?:D

I'm working on a WIP at the moment but it is close to the type of games I love, third person puzzle horror genres/shooters, it's not as crazy as an mmorpg but I'm only two months into learning unity, and of those two months I'd say I'd spent two weeks actually using unity.

My ideal dream game to make would probably something akin to 'the division' but let's start small first, I can do that next month. :D

I have a "type" of game or at least games with certain characteristics that I want to make but no single dream game.

I just think games can be much better and more to them than what we normally see. Of course, by that very nature it also means it is a lot more work and time involved. But then who knows I might be one of a few who actually notices the stuff in the end.

An example characteristic I would like is to make the game world more cohesive. More "real" in a sense. Where the inhabitants all have a background (doesn't need to be much) and a purpose for being there. Beyond waiting to kill players I mean. I'd like each to have things they actually do for their daily routine. And ideally interact with each other as well with rivalries, collaborations and so forth.

Also interaction in general is high on the list.

I'd like the player to be able to do more and experience more. That's my dream. One day I will reach it. There will likely just be a lot of failed attempts and experiments along the way.

EDIT: Thanks for posting this and making me remember what was most meaningful to me. I'd lost my way over the past couple of weeks or so and now I can feel a tiny flame inside urging me to return to my FPS Action Adventure.

oh yeah, I remember that I wanted to create some sort of fake AI also, that acts as some sort of social system for players and NPCs alike, so that each player would fill out some kind of personality tests or sheets and it would actually change the characters behaviour when the player is afk and how they can respond or interact with NPCs :) some kind of non visual character creation :D

and I'm happy if it helps :) I imagined that I'm probably not the only one who from time to time needs to get back to something that seems impossible to reach, but worthwhile if it would ever happen. Actually I was reading some interview recently about no mans sky, that this is how they even got into their game, after creating some smaller games and having moderate success they just started working on that insane game idea of infinite procedural space/planet/life generation :D and well, even though the game is not published yet, we can already see that they succeeded :D
or just today I was reading about spore and how those guys made the character creator possible, it's soooo damn fascinating to see technology behind games :D and that those people started out like everyone else.
edit: have to add here also another project, which I was seeing being started from players from wurm online sandbox mmorpg: life is feudal :D they had a dream of making a better sandbox mmo and they did , not sure if it's better but they did do a sandbox game :D

steady :) I'm fighting a little with the camera controls in those tight tunnel passages and I'm still not 100% sure which kind of procedural generation I want to do for the game, but I'm getting there :) and I'm updating my blog about it :D

I'm practically obsessed with game development now XD and I wished I could go faster, but real life is not letting me :p

Yes, a VR system that allows people to create, share and experience worlds and games. But really it would mostly be taking the Unity game engine and editor and a good VR 3d modelling tool chain into VR, with lots of stock models, animations and textures. So people could just choose a style of world and start creating.

Jagged Alliance meets S.T.A.L.K.E.R. meets Irish-speaking orcs.

It's on the back burner for a while, but I'll probably end up using the line-of-sight/sound detection mechanisms I've been adding to Spamocalypse. And my next project will probably be a turn-based tactics game for practice with that genre.

Nice mix! I especially loved Jagged Alliance.

By any slim chance have you played X-COM apocalypse? Horrible graphics. But man... I loved the gameplay, so bad.

I would love mix those two (JA2 and XCOM). Absolutely unfeasible for a single lifetime, it'd be more like a team project with a budget.
I would keep the tiled isometric 2D, destructible environment. But find a compromise between jagged alliance's realistic setting, and sci fi.

I jumped into Unity with the intent to make a mobile game akin to House of the Dead. I've made a few attempts but life and laziness would get in the way. I still intend on making it just not sure when I'll get back into it - currently getting a friend spun up with Unity.

But my idea for the game is to make a simple 'tap to shoot' railed-fps. I have a story and setting loosely put together in my head and parts on paper. I've made a prototype where the camera would follow a path, spawn enemies when doors were opened or # of enemies killed or the player entered a trigger. However, i tried to implement a melee system for close quarters... failed (not enough experience to know-how) and although it was on rails, I tried to keep it slightly dynamic by having the camera lock onto targets automatically (the closer enemy was targeted) or objects - which I still think might work out OK. I liked the idea of having enemies spawn in random locations so that replay would be slightly different.

I'm still holding onto the idea and use it to motivate me to get back into Unity.

thanks and not so long tbh, but I got experience with 3dsmax and maya before that, so I'm not a complete newbie to 3d modelling :) I'm happy though that Blender is now so much more userfriendly nowadays :D when I tried it out years ago the interface was horrible lol, so it scared me away from it XD and now I'm happy it exists since it's free and actually from what I can see has alot of tools that are even better than what 3dsmax and maya have to offer :), atleast from my point of view.
edit: not so long means just a few months and I have not modelled much :/

thats one of my goals also :) implementing alot of the mechanics I want for my dream game into smaller games or in other words for every major game mechanic, make a game as a proof of concept :)

At this point I'd like to see a game that features proper city. You know, where you can enter every room in every building without loading screens in 1st or 3rd person. And it should be proper city, with apartment blocks, with proper size. 20 x 20 km at least. City should be either fully populated (few million npc) or have signs of being previously inhabited.

You're 100% correct. I think it was an option of the initial game settings, under "Game Style", you chose between realistic and sci-fi, You could turn it off, and no critters would show up in the mines.

I like the idea of putting contemporary resources (no lasers and such), and put it against new unknown threats.

I have two. One that is nearly complete and will pitched hopefully next week. (In development on and off for two years). And the other is one I have been developing for nearly six years, and is probably a year out for a first playable. Though technically, I have already built it completely twice, the first was all 2d, and the second was 3D, but was mostly realistic styled. I have completed revamped the art direction and have started over with a much cleaner and flexible architecture. That's my real passion project, I hope to release it one day, but for now it is what I work on to relax.

I have this dream of a life simulator. Features include
    • Mass balance accounting of all elements
    • Multi layered game play, you would start as an amoeba and work your way up. Each layer would interact with the layers above and below.
    • Multi player (MMO on my worse days)
    • Genetics and evolution
Basically imagine a game like spore, except biologically accurate.

There are still some early screen shots from the game here. At the time I was struggling to build a realistic AI for an amoeba. Fortunately for me my harddrive crashed and I lost everything. I was able to restart with an achievable scope with Pond Wars.

*cough* yeah my "horror game" goes into that direction from time to time since the idea started with making a game where you play an amoeba, but it's slowly evolving into some kind of deep sea fantasy/realistic translucent underwater creatures. I want to implement evolution also, but in a more simple way in form of attaching and detaching limbs and create abilities and stuff through that. I wished I could do something like spore, but I'm definitely not there yet :p and those guys were working on it for 8 years XD

Mine is to remake the missionforce:cyberstorm game but add better AI, extra gameplay.

At the moment, & probably it will replace the other, my ideal is to create the simplest game with the most addictive gameplay (gameplay, not psychological hooks or skinner boxes) such that people keep playing because they actually want to.

I have a fully written design on a fighting game. Kinda - MortalKombat meets Gears of War, in a over the top Fantasy style.
But I shall not even consider it until I get better at everything and - convince several close friends to help out.
Maybe a vertical slice - one day.

    Nice topic.

What my dream game is... Ability to affect world as player, but world should have a reaction I didn't anticipate against it while maintaining freedom of action.

And very much this. When was the last game you could cover someone with your body from enemy attack?

Also Coop. Singleplayer is 90% boring compared to even much weaker multiplayer; and I hate PvP, as it doesn't usually support any non-repetitive options to play with just one-two friends.

No not really I make whatever game I want. I would like to make some money from my games though so I could have a higher art budget to make my games closer to how I want them To look

I want to make a game like zombie shooter, a shooter gore game but set in alice in wonderland but to do it properly the way I want I'll need a higher art budget. I want to make an online multiplayer realtime risk game, and now I finally have the skills to do it just need money for the art.

After watching arrows thread I want to make a Zelda 64 like game that focuses on combat dungeon, puzzles

It's not a game but this year I will have finished licensing all the art that I've wanted to license a long time to use in my games.

i have 2 original games I want to make but both will require that I make my own art regardless of the art I've licensed.

Don't we all, but remember Candy Crush was made by a few at the start and they made Billions with a B... I love MMORPG' and have since they made them with Ultima, and Asheron Call 1... But feel they are dieing off.. Just saying. You still can make those type of games of course but don't follow suit of the rest of them that are not doing so great.

Anyways best of luck, and would love to see what you make..Remember MMO's are one of the hardest games to make, so make sure you get some people to help!!

Do you guys remember Magic Carpet from Bullfrog? It was a first person magic slinging game from the mid 90s, running on DOS. The terrain was destructible(voxels I'd assume), and the water could have reflections too. Generally this game was pretty ahead of its time. I want to make a modern version of it, similar gameplay, but more modern things. They made Magic Carpet 2, which had some features, like levelling system for spells, some boss battles, and some other goodies like an actual map of sorts, bonus levels, and caves instead of only outdoor levels.

So I have the concept in my head. I honestly think that it is doable for me, even alone, because of the existence of tools like Unity, Gametextures.com, and some Unity assets that speed up creation of things. Generally the game wouldn't have to be so far out of the norm. A flying FPS isn't something far-fetched, nor is much else of the game play, though the destructible terrain may be something I leave out unless I find a nice asset for it that works great.

But, I'm still in the middle of my first actual sizable Unity project. I've made a few simple things before so I know I can do some work, but before I try to tackle that big dream project I want to make at least 2 smaller ones, to help me get into the swing of Unity, as well as my art pipeline, etc...

My dream project was to create my own fighting game that would be better then mortal kombat.

In fact I picked up the mortal kombat 3 ultimate cartridge and called the number on the back, and asked for a job. I told them mortal kombat was generic and they needed to hire me to polish it. I think I was 11, the secretary laughed and told me to make my own game. years later I'm actually working on a fighting game demo in Unity called #AscensionX

i was a kid, who picked up a phone and called long distance. I think i got through to activision, and I demanded to speak with ed boon. ( who worked for midway) didn't know until years later activision was just the publisher. but its funny after college and working freelance I started the project back, and hopefully they will eventually be playing my game.

I would love to make some sort of detective/stealth game in space, let's say you chase the bad guy across the solar system, and it is all semi-realistic early space settlements, small cramped moon bases and space stations with the vaccuum never far away, and plenty of time spent in the suit. Something built from the ground up to make you feel like space is all around you.

Normally the only time in space-based games that you feel like you're in space is in first-person ship combat, and anytime you land you might as well be on earth. It would be great to feel like an astronaut everywhere you go, that you're really 'out there' and not just in some restyled suburbia.

Just to expand a little, what I've got in mind is a cross between the gameplay/story of MGS and the semi-realistic but very artistic visuals and style of Adr1ft. It would be third-person (because that's just the best :D) and would involve having to get to know and develop relationships with characters to find information and move forward in the game (I'm thinking of Star Wars: KOTOR).

If anyone's read Ben Bova some of his short stories in Asimov magazines inspired a lot of the type of world and setting that I'd like to show.

The basic idea I have for the story, is that there is a group of people, posing as a mining corporation, who have gone out somewhere in the solar system to develop a clone army of 'enhanced' humans, and to gain control of the solar system and ultimately earth itself, and the protagonist is an undercover agent, maybe posing as a mining worker or with some space-related specialization, sent to find out where they are hiding. The story should have a dark and gritty realism but be ultimately positive.

Anyway, there you go, when I'm in alpha testing I'll let all you guys know! :D

Heh, no kidding. :) @Farelle, you pretty much just described High Frontier exactly!

However, High Frontier is a building/city-sim game. @Billy4184 is describing a very different character-oriented, story-driven game, just set in a realistic nearish-future solar system. That sounds like something I'd be happy to play!

I've always wanted to make a top-down survival game, which has heavy focus on cooperation / multiplayer. I remember many years ago I tried this mod for Warcraft 3 called "Ice Troll tribes" and it was so cool. I mean, my brother and I didn't get farther than 5 minutes cause we weren't enough players (one of the other trolls died) but the sense of exploration and survival was awesome.

I'd very much like to make something like that in the future. Exploration, survival and tons of building options... It'd be great. :)
