What I want to know is if I need to host a server to enable players in my game to play online.

Not necessarily. You could use a cloud service in place of a server to connect people for matches, etc. Photon and Unity Multiplayer are two of the available options.

They are free up to X amount of players at the same time, then it ends up costing, you buy user licenses in packs. It is much cheaper and IMO better to just host your own though at a place like http://digitalocean.com, but of course you would then have to know what you are doing when dealing with server and such. There are lots of tutorials out there though. It ends up being quite cost-effective and a very useful knowledge set to have anyways.
