Disabling search breadcrumbs in project window?

When I'm trying to use the project tab, I frequently run into an issue where the breadcrumbs reorder or cover over what I'm trying to select.

This means that if I'm trying to open something, double clicking gets tedious because it moves between click one and two. It also is annoying because it removes a lot of the space that I have when trying to look through search results. Specifically I'm talking about this:

Is there anyway to disable this annoying box? I haven't been able to find anyone else with this problem but it's been really obnoxious for me. When I'm not in the search mode, it gives me just a single path at the bottom. I would like to just have the path in the bottom rather than this whole rigamarole.

As an aside and a bug, I just noticed that it also doesn't even behave consistently when you have two project windows open.

Sometimes it opens the breadcrumbs on the wrong window, sometimes it mirrors them on both. This just seems like a poorly worked out "feature" to me.

Any followup or comments on this? It'd be nice for someone at Unity to at least acknowledge that this is a legitimate complaint.

At the risk of this turning into spam, I'm bumping again.

Does anyone even monitor this forum or is it designed as a place for people to quietly yell into the void?

I would also love to disable this bar. Super annoying when you have multiple project windows

This is terribly annoying. Sometimes it takes more than half the project search window and makes you click the wrong target or even drag stuff.
Should really have a toggle option.

As a followup, this is still an issue as of Unity 2019.3.10f1. Still, no official acknowledgement at how bad it is.

Another month, another continued lack of acknowledgement at how bad this is.

The inconsistency you're noticing is based on whether the full path can
be displayed along the bottom of the window. On the left Project view, notice that "Assets/...Megafish.blend" fits along the bottom of the window. If you resize the window to make it smaller, that text will no longer fit, and Unity will start showing that tall window instead.

So, given that explanation, it also gives you a (fairly lame) workaround, if this is really bothering you: Ensure that the Project window is given a lot of horizontal space. The more space it has, the more likely that text is to fit without "wrapping". That's really not a great solution, though, since normally you probably don't want a huge project window.

Yes, I recognized all of that, but I think you're missing the real problem point. It is showing the breadcrumbs on a different Project Panel than the panel where the object is selected. This seems to be the case for all situations.

The fact is, though, these breadcrumbs don't serve any useful purpose compared to the problems they create and nobody on the dev side want to comment on the UI nightmare it creates.

Ah, that's an interesting added twist. I've never opened multiple Project windows before. Trying it now, though, it seems that two Project windows stay in sync with each other, at least in 2019.3, so I don't see the value of having two project windows open at the same time.

However, in messing around with this, it seems I've stumbled upon a way to disable the ugly breadcrumb box:
    • Open a 2nd Project window
    • Close the first one
From now on, that Project window will no longer show breadcrumbs, regardless of its width. I've closed and reopened Unity, and the behavior remains, so this does seem like a potential way to avoid the issue.

Anyway, make sure you're submitting bug reports on any issues you're hoping get fixed. Posting on the forums doesn't generally help to make the Unity devs aware of things. Ideally report your bug, then include the bug report number in your post.

I usually have 2 open, one locked and one not. That way I can quickly switch back and forth between prefabs. Interesting, It seems to have worked. We'll see if it sticks. Thanks for that odd behavior.

I guess I really should be putting in bugs instead of yelling into the void, my experience submitting bugs (with unity and many other platforms over the years) has been time consuming and not helpful, but it is the right thing to do.

It's definitely time consuming, and it's definitely only occasionally helpful. I'd say I see a fix for a bug I've reported maybe 25% of the time, and probably somewhere in the range of 2-6 months later. So, I submit bugs mainly if they're easy to repro, or they're show-stoppers for me.

    Hi Sand_Lantern & All -

I was redirected here from a separate thread, and will incorporate your feedback into a broader Search UX initiative that I am currently managing.

Thank you very much for taking the time to share this issue.

I didn't have this problem until updating from 2019.4.0f to 2019.4.16f, so annoying!

There is even bigger problem with breadcrumbs! The breadcrumbs section does not have constant size, and it disappears when nothing is selected. As result, when nothing is selected and you select something at the bottom, the breadcrumbs are suddenly displayed, just under the cursor. So double-clicking a file from the bottom of the list does not work!! You need to click once, scroll and then double click again! This is so confusing, I can't believe you didn't fix it for so long..

This seems to be partially fixed with 2020.3.x, at least the breadcrumbs are not taking the entire search space
