Nothing worse than dropping a full terrain in a new scene to edit it only to have forgotten to turn off the damn auto-bake and it starts baking your massive terrain. Needed to force close Unity. Is there anyway to set it off by default? I can't seem to find any way but I may just be missing something and Google wasn't at all helpful.

I believe that you can turn auto lightmapping off by default like this:

Edit > Project Settings > Graphics > Shader stripping > Lightmap modes / Fog modes > set both to Manual

I agree with you that this is a terrible idea to have this on by default, and I'm not sure what reasoning the Unity dev team had to leave auto as the default.

I was having intermittent issues with my entire machine bogging down, and a quick ctrl + shift + esc to bring up the task manager showed me the that two instances JobProcess.exe via Unity were sucking up nearly 70% of my CPU resources (my work machine is a laptop, not entirely the best solution, but still). I knew right away that it was the auto lighting, so I turned it off. I thought, "There must be a way to turn that off by default." I found your unanswered question via Google, and became frustrated that there was no obvious solution. So, I did some poking around in Unity's labyrinthine settings and found this. Hope it works for both of us.

Is there any way to modify this setting by code? I want to automate this for all projects in our company.

Did you ever find a way to access the settings for this via script?
