Question Detail Maps: Import as "Default" or "Normal"

    I have a few detail maps I use to add dirt to surfaces. I noticed today that when I used them, and I adjust the "Normal Detail Scale", I was getting a weird change in the lighting direction, very similar to when I forget to set a normal map's Texture Type to to "Normal Map" in the texture import window. I changed my detail map to "Normal Map", and the weird lighting issue stopped. But now I'm not sure that's correct.

    Given that Detail maps contain two channels of normal data, and two channels of other data, what's the correct Texture Type for these textures?

    Here's what I mean about weird behavior when adjusting the Detail Normal Scale when the texture type is Default on my detail texture:
