Destroy the land

Good morning all ! I wanted to ask you, how to destroy land in 2D.
To be more precise, I have a school project and I will re-adapt this 2 player 2D tank game.

to destroy first you have to create

how to destroy land depends on how you created it

if you created it with a mesh then you have to change the mesh points

if you created it by drawing then you have to erase the destroyed parts

 

My idea was to go through photoshop, create a simple map the imported into Unity and behind when the projectile hits the ground a part is destroyed and the collider adapts
