As far as I'm concerned, Depth of Field is used to make the area you're focusing on clear and the outside blurry. So I focus the camera on a child object set to be far away from the camera - this makes the distance clear and the foreground blurry, okay. I then move the focus point right in front of the camera, it becomes clear but the outside (background) also remains clear. The visualization option for the first case shows white objects in the foreground and blackens out as it goes further, the second case just shows black.

The second case is what I'm using but I'd like only the foreground to be clear and the distance to be blurry (essentially the opposite of the first case). How do I accomplish this? The visualisation is always only those two cases and never what I need, even though it's what I've seen to be the main use of Depth of Field in every video game ever.

I'm using Unity 2017.1 (and this also happened in 5.6.1f1).
