I noticed there are old/multiple versions of packages in appdata. Is there a reason for them to be there? Do i have to delete them manually?

What packages are you referring to? Please show a screenshot. Typically you remove/update/add packages with Package Manager (Window/Package Manager)

Yes, i'm talking about packages installed through the package manager. packages like entities or tiny. Do old versions of those packages get deleted automatically?

You manage packages through Package Manager. Perhaps we cache in the file system, I would not recommend deleting manually as you suggest. Is it causing a problem?

Not a big problem, but since i own a 128 ssd as a main disk and packages at the moment take 3gb, it would be nice to know the manager cleans up itself.

I'm looking at making space on my HD today and came across 7gb of previous versions of packages in the appdata cache folder...just over half in an npm folder and just under half in a packages folder. Updating packages does not remove the old versions.
I am not deleting them as there are json files also in the cache refering to these older versions. I would like to know how to safely delete them though, if they are not needed.

The package manager only allows removal of the currently installed version.

    Cheers

i cleaned manually all old packages (leaving just the latest version which is the one i update all my projects to)..
i have now more than 6Gb of SSD free

there isn't any problem in cleaning the downloaded versions, since each projects copies its use package into the /Library .. and if needed again that package is downloaded again

wishing for a clean up option too.

Just looked with wiztree what is using so much harddrive space.
First time manual cleanup. Deleted old versions in "Unity\cache\packages\packages.unity.com" and "Unity\cache\npm\packages.unity.com\"
Just removed old big package versions up to last stable/preview in use.
Reduced harddrive space usage from 11.8GB to 2,3GB in "Unity\cache\packages\packages.unity.com"
and from 9,3GB to 4,5GB where old packages from com.unity.burst were taking much space in "Unity\cache\npm\packages.unity.com\"
On my small laptop sdd every GB is needed.
