Definitely a rant, and shoutout. Been here for four years, and Unity somehow gotten worse.

Indie developers might not be the target market but 2/3 of Unity's revenue is still generated by video games according to CEO. It's their best interests to keep focusing on games even if they're looking to enter new markets. Albeit, their new tooling is becoming increasingly solo developer unfriendly in UX.

Whats the comparison w newer revs?

I think my experience w compile time is better now than in olden days because its easier to segment stuff into separate dlls for compilation. So compile times end up being much more manageable in larger projects if organized reasonably.

That said, I'm interested in if an apples to apples comparison has actually gotten much worse.

The project that I was testing the newer releases with wouldn't have been able to load on Unity 5.6.7. I only tried it on a whim and not to make a meaningful comparison. A few weeks ago I made an actual comparison between the release used on a work project (2021.3.15) and the at the time latest alpha (2023.2.0a12).

Performance was measured with the editor iteration profiler.
