Hi, I'm trying to publish a good quality template of an infinite hopper that will help a lot of developers to study and change to make their own game.

So I have waited 3 weeks to get decline because the admin asked me to do of a few fixes.. e-mails changed, things fixed and another few days waiting in expectation to be approved and I got this message from the Admin:

    "Hi Niobium Studios,

Thanks very much for your submission to the Asset Store.

'Crossy Template' has been declined. We have decided that your template is too similar to the original "Crossy Road" game, and due to that we cannot publish it. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you."

Really admin? So should I publish assets so crappy that other developers cannot identify to popular games? Is there a clause for that says "don't publish similar games on the Asset Store" for publishing a template asset?

Here is how the template demo scene looks like.. What do you guys thing about this?

I think it looks wonderful. Seems odd that they would reject it. Maybe you can either sell the 3d models or just the project template (using some other models).

I'm sorry your pack got rejected because you probably spent some quality development time on it. And this might sound a little mean, but I'm kinda glad they declined this pack based on the specific criteria they stated.
I'm not a fan of packs nearly identical to a popular game being put on the asset store - for novice developers to flood the market with clones. And packs like this perpetuate the 100 clones a day marketplace deluge. Some packs similar to this are being used by wanna-be's - changing up the title screen and putting it straight on steam.

Here's a couple ideas that might allow you to get the 'template' approved though.
Change the name to frogger template or dodgie template.
Add in some unique core mechanic that makes this pack different than the commercial release of crossy road.
Change the view angle - make it orthographic to the left instead of exactly like crossy road.
Maybe change up the aesthetic - instead of crappier graphics as you stated, why not make them better than the crossy road graphics?

I don't think the Asset Store Admin have this kind of "control" on clones due to the amount of templates that are genres of famous games like Candy Crush, Street Fighter and a lot of other good templates on the Asset Store.

The idea of the templates are not to flood the games market with clones but to skip the boring part of making an identical game and open for innovation ideas for new game devs.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions!

I was unaware about this asset. Sounds pretty solid!

If I was to roughly compare mine with this one, mine is focused on features and their is focused on presentation.

"Unworthy"? are they in the same class as the great unwashed? Your choice of word leave a lot to be desired.
"If someone really needs to buy a simple template like this then they lack the most basic skills in game development." Perhaps they are buying to learn, or do the 'basic skills' just come to you in a dream?

I agree with TheAnimator and the admin. At some point Unity has to start to defend their brand against what has been happening on Steam. It is to the point where players are saying that they cringe when they see the Unity logo at the start of a game.

I believe you are sincere when you say you expect this to be a learning pack, or a starting point for developers to make their own games. But the reality is, most of your customers would take exactly what you provide, and launch it on Steam for $1 almost completely unaltered. There are many threads on this forum about asset flippers and it truly is getting to the point where Unity´s reputation is being tarnished because of it.

Many people are unaware this is happening, but the day after you launch this pack on the asset store, there will be 5 new games on Steam that consist entirely of any demo scene you include. It really is that bad.

Thanks Carve - Asset flipper is the term I was looking for.

I agree with you nunesbarbosa - the intent is for learning or a basis for a better game which is awesome - unfortunately the templates are being used by flippers to clone the latest popular game. This is just the case of a good idea being used for wrong reasons.

Hopefully you can incorporate some solid updates and get the pack up - because I hate seeing wasted time and effort, but I equally dislike how these packs are facilitating lazy hacky asset flippers into crapping out the template with a different name and calling it a game.
I'd say some people use templates for learning and as a starting base for games. They are not the people I am talking about.

I've locked this because the only options that will be considered are:

    a) you reskin it/rebrand it
    or
    b) sell it outside of asset store.

Asset store isn't a right, it's Unity's store that they wholly own, and they gave you good legal reasons (for your sake) why they could not accept it.
