So I'm trying to install and run Unity on my new Windows 8 installation... and I get an error.

    Code (csharp):
    1.
    2. You are using Direct3D Debug Runtime, this is not supported by
    3. Unity. Switch to Retail runtime in DirectX Control Panel.
    4.
I tried going to the Microsoft site and running the install again, but nothing happened. What do I do here? :\

Wow. I didn't know "Debug/Checked" version of Windows 8 Consumer Preview is a different version than the one from here. Now I have to reinstall :\

Before I do, is there a way to switch from Debug DirectX to Retail DirectX?

Did you try to do what the message told you?
"Switch to Retail runtime in DirectX Control Panel"?

There was no DirectX Control Panel, so I downloaded directx.cpl (or someodd) from the net, and tried to use it, but everything was grayed out lol (even with Admin rights)

install the DX sdk, it contains the panel and all required runtimes to switch. I doubt its possible without it

and that it does not work in dx debug mode is normal as dx emulates gpu hardware there running the stuff on cpu and unity does not cpu mode so its on gpu or nowhere :)

Are you on a proper windows version not one meant explicitely for debug?
Also are you sure that there are no debug plugins running and potentially enforcing such a policy? (just in case: Unity is perfectly fine running in NVIDIA PerfHUD so that is not the problem here)

What can I do when I have a "Windows 8 Debug" version of OS? Is there any chance to open a Unity?
