Daydream controller working without daydream sdk selected

After updating my project to new sdk and upgrading unity to daydream technical preview by mistake I added cardboard sdk instead of daydream sdk and run the app. The weird thing is that controller worked just fine. What is the purpose of using daydream sdk then? Can you also do something like this?
