is there a way to change the gui color for unity? I've seen people say that it requires pro.
I also am new to unity and don't have the experience or money to make continual payments just for something as simple as a ui recolor

It requires pro. No, you can't have it for free.

I honestly agree, the whole Dark UI for pro only is really dumb.

If you say "then buy pro" that's even more stupid, no one should have to pay for a UI color change.

If anything, they should allow you to fully customize Unity's UI color to be whatever you want, white, black, blue, green.
You can change what the UI looks like at run time, so you should be able to when editing as well.

You don't have to pay for a UI colour change. Unity works perfectly well without it, the purchase is not at all a requirement.
I find it amusing that when Unity give us all of the useful and excellent bits of the engine for free people then choose to complain about stuff that doesn't really matter at all. I can understand some of the criticism about the splash screen, people at least think that might have an impact their final product. But the colour of the Editor window when we're working on the game..? Really?

Unity don't have to give us anything at all. They'd be well within their rights to make us pay for the engine before using anything - as they used to do, and as used to be the norm before they came along and helped change it.

Unity isn't pay to win, pro only gets you cosmetics!

If the editor bothers your eyes, just get Flux. It makes even a plain white screen easier to look at late at night.

I guess it's the easiest complaint for people to find. I mean, there is plenty to complain about in Unity(as with any engine), but yet there is still a huge cult following behind getting the dark skin into free.

If a light computer screen hurts your eyes, get f.lux as mentioned above.

Okay, even if using Pro edition (or Education edition), how do you change the dark UI scheme to a lighter color? The fact that you can't even see the black text on dark UI is irritating.

Yeah... For me editor GUI can be pink with green polka dots and I wouldn't buy Pro just to get rid of it. Though I think Pro-only stuff should be available separately for people who require only single item of the pro (e.g. splash removal, lv11 or services) while having to buy/rent Pro only when you're over 100k mark (perhaps with lowering it to say, 75k or 50k mark).

Thanks to the hard work of a helpful contributor, yes, you can (essentially) have it for free.

    http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/zios-editor-theme-support.411818/

It's not 100% the same as the dark theme in Pro, but I'm liking this much better than the default light theme in Unity Personal. For folks already using Pro, this gives you theme options beyond what you have. And for those who want people to stop asking for this feature in Unity Personal, try giving them this link instead of telling them their desires aren't important just because you don't share them.

I recently upgraded, for reasons. The editor instantly turned this horrible black colour. First thing I did was google how to switch it back.

I personally hate the dark theme and reccomend Unity make the light theme pro only. ;)

I feel like they should do a thing where free users can choose default themes like light or dark, then pro people get like an RGB style UI where they can make the UI whatever color they want

That way, new people will stop complaining they don't have dark theme anymore, and pro users can make their screen look however they want, which is a way cooler feature anyway

Same here. A light gray background is far better than just making it black. Or blue like in the old days. This was horrible.

Yes, I reckon some of the earlier examples were dark themed.

Though some people were fortunate to have early user interfaces that were light themed.

Behold! An "early example" of a wearable calculator. :p

That's pretty bulky though. We've since learned to shrink our tech and make it more practical.

I never understood the point of making the Dark UI a Pro only feature, this is because nobody is going to pay $1500 for a theme. Making it Dark changes nothing on either side. So what is the actual point of keeping it on the Pro version? its not like anybody will pay $1500 for it and its not like it makes a difference to development. Its just cosmetic and has 0 value to either party.

If it had zero value, free users wouldn't be asking for it and Unity wouldn't be so petty about keeping it pro-only. It does seem like a very strange "feature" to withhold comapred to all the other stuff they've made available to free users, though.

Given that their trend seems to be opening up more and more features, I half suspect they'll open it up in the next major release (e.g. Not Unity 6 But The One After Unity 5 That No Longer Has Version Numbers). It's truly difficult to imagine why they should care about such a minor thing.

Newsflash: nobody can pay $1500 or needs to right now.

Also I agree - worthless feature.

Well heres something you probably weren't aware of

Everyone thinks that the "brown" fad games experienced a few years ago was a new thing. But way back in the day, Graphic Artists loved that color pallette

And look at that display size! It almost takes up an entire wall!
