We recently teamed up with the guys and gals at Extra Credits to create a video series on making your first game.

We noticed in the community that A LOT of your wonder how to initially get started in making a game, we cover the technical side of stuff in our tutorials but not really the theory (if that's the right word).

Hardly. Just about everything they said other than "just go to the asset store" was generic high level information.

It was sponsored, we're not hiding that. The biggest thing we didn't want was an in your face all things Unity advert, what we did want was to spread knowledge and cover more theoretical topics we lack in our learn section and that would be useful to our community. I think it accomplished this rather well.

That's a great first video for the series, and I think they are a great choice to give this talk.

I was worried at first that it would be too preachy towards Unity, but they definitely did it right so far.

Very practically presented and I like the Sid the Séance Kid style cartooning.

Nice, I love Extra Credits and the video has good advice for beginners. Wouldn't mind seeing them talk more about Unity though...

I just watched that first video and it was definitely up to Extra Credit's normal high quality. Kudos for getting them to make a set of videos like this.

For those who are worried about it being a shill for Unity, EC gave basically the same amount of shout-out to Unity as they did to the sponsor of the Punic Wars video series. Yes, they did suggest "go to the Asset Store," but I've seen that suggestion numerous times in Gamasutra and other game design articles by people who weren't being prompted by Unity to make a video or write an article.

I'm really looking forward to next week's episode.

If they didn't suggest go to the asset store you should be concerned. It's like being hired and told your job is to duplicate the function of the .net library. Uh, why do that if it's not an academic exercise for uni and you have the money to buy the needed assets or they're free?

I think these videos should be placed somewhere more view-able to the beginners

    Great video by Extra Credits.

Just stumbled across this thread, and watched those videos. They were so funny I had to pause them whenever I wanted to take a drink. Educational, too. Some stuff I learned the hard way, but there was plenty I didn't know. Thanks to all who helped make those!

Ah, I've been watching Extra Credits since the very first episode. Love that show. And I very much enjoyed this recent run of episodes. Good stuff, and a long time coming. Kudos to Unity for sponsoring these episodes! Always a good idea to associate yourself with this particular subject.

Not to mention, I'm finding a ton of FREE stuff in the Assets store that is actually useful. I mean, basics to be sure, but much needed so I can focus on learning Unity instead of learning how to make 6 Kinds of Grass.

Don't get me wrong, once I get Blender, GIMP, Audacity and RAIN downloaded (Hughesnet sucks for speed, especially once you pass your Data allowed) I'll be trying to make grass all on my own, but it sure does help to be able to dive in quickly with a lot of the Freebies on the Store.

Anyways, never hurts to be able to see something, try to re-create it, and then add your own twists so that you can learn how to build something from the Ground Up.

It's not like they said 'Spend Money in the Unity Store', they just said go there. So go. Browse. Find what you can for free, or for $0.15 or $2.00... a lot of low priced stuff in there if you aren't going to make it yourself.

Or hire a Graphic Designer and pay them a few hundred dollars an hour. You could do that instead.

Hey Nathan00 - look into UFE in the asset store.
Also may want to make your own thread in the future - check the forum rules for some helpful info.

Very practical video. It's always struggle when you want to make things done the first time. make it small and simple is the best way to start on a big engine.

I recommend starting with something simple and go testing the evolution of knowledge and creating new games according to the time / experience

    Cool videos;
My first Unity game, back in 2008, was my most successful 'product' which is kind of weird when thinking about it..

This is so strange, these were the first four videos I showed to people yesterday to encourage them to make games and here I am today.

Might be a bit ambitious for a first project that mate.

I'd want to make a 10 Pin Bowling game on Xbox One, similar to Kinect Sports on 360, but using the controller instead of Kinect. even if I had a PC that would run Unity I think that kind of project would be a bit too technical for a beginner like me.

I'd make something simple like a Pac Man clone or a Space Invaders clone.

I started to learn unity with these lessons. Of cource, they were not a basic for all my knowledge, but as a worthy complement to my cources on Coursera and to other video classes, these were a quality guides.
