can anyone recommend any tools for creating game sound effects? Jumping noises, coin collecting clinks etc? Thanks
Well, you can use LMMS aka Linux Multimedia Studio. I suggest trying out the Freeboy plugin, that comes with LMMS. You can make all sorts of old school, Mario type game sounds with it too. I hope that helps.
There's a lot of stuff you can do with Audacity, too. In fact, I built my career in sound design around Audacity. Still do.
The Zoom H2n is not to be underestimated either, and it's very affordable considering how good it sounds. Surprisingly often, you'll be able to find the sound you're after by just using and combining things in your surroundings.
Wooah! Cool! Thank you for that link. I gotta get me one of those!! That is very good advice. I've been doing that as well, whenever I make sound effects and stuff. Nice.
Here are a couple of links: ~ Bfxr : "Bfxr is an elaboration of the glorious Sfxr, the program of choice for many people looking to make sound effects for computer games. Bfxr has moved in the direction of increased complexity and range of expression. You have full rights to all sounds made with bfxr, and are free to use them for any purposes, commercial or otherwise." ~ ChipTone : "ChipTone is a free tool for generating sound effects, primarily for games." As well as a fully featured FX synth, it also contains a sampler, vocoder, and sequencer. ~ I personally use FL Studio to make most of my sound effects. It's expensive and has quite the learning curve, but it's where I'm comfortable. The basic version comes with a lot of plugins that are extremely useful for this stuff (like Effector and Soundgoodizer) Some advice here: don't underestimate what can be achieved with just a white noise machine and a multiband equalizer.
