Creating 3d Models from other 3d models and concept art

    Hello,

    I currently create 3d models to use in a mod(non commercial use) and I found some pretty cool models that I want to recreate. Now my problem is, will I get in legal trouble if I don't sell anything and just use it for a free mod? I will give credit to the original owner but I'm still a bit scared. I don't want anything bad and I try to contact the original owner beforehand but in some cases I never get an answer.

    What do you think?
