Whoa, I've never seen anything like this before! Not once! Nope! Never! There hasn't been a time in my life where I haven't seen another half-baked minecraft clone.

@RockoDyne: I was expecting, like a sucker apparently, that the title meant a game with potential. This has no potential.

Of course it has no potential. Even the pitch for the game has to reference another, better game.

The textures are only very similar, and will be changed as development continues.

Come back and announce once you have something substantial to show. I've seen more progress and better results from experimental prototypes in that enormous thread dissecting Minecraft's internals than those videos are revealing.

Early marketing to gather attention is important, but this is far too early for that.

Very similar feeling to Candy whatever and Flappy who cares.

@IDA_king100 - just wanted to confirm, this is something that YOU are working on or just a link to something that you saw and you were interested in? You haven't really been clear in your post.

Minecraft was successful because it filled a particular niche, scratched an itch for gamers. It was also incredibly lucky with exposure and YouTube developing. It was the right thing in the right place at the right time, change any of those and it wouldn't have been successful.

It is now old, hundreds of similar titles have been released and people are no longer interested in it. After all if they feel like playing it, well Minecraft already exists.

You won't have a successful game by copying/cloning another one. I'd suggest funneling your efforts elsewhere unless you're doing this purely for a learning exercise.

I wouldn't say that people aren't interested in it anymore - it's still the #2 app in the iOS app store for downloads, and the first one is ... still Minecraft related.

It would certainly be fair to say: why would anyone download the Minecraft clones when Minecraft already exists and (let's face it) is better.

I'm, of course, still making a blocky voxel engine as well. I know people will call it a Minecraft clone because it's blocky. I chose blocky because building doesn't work well with marching cubes/dual contouring from my experience (but it has slopes and other non-cubic blocks as well).

However, mine has a very special focus that will take it rather far away from Minecraft and will target a group of people who aren't satisfied by what Minecraft offers - I've spoken with these people, and I'm also one of them.

If you're just cloning Minecraft, though, which seems to be the case in this topic as well... please just do it for learning experience.

Plus Minecraft has an established modding community surrounding it allowing you to easily extend your experience. You stand to get a considerable amount of value from Minecraft. I know I have spent more time on it than most other games.

My primary complaint about these clones is that they don't try to solve the problems still plaguing Minecraft. One of those is simply that modding is a big chore for the community. They literally have to reverse engineer each and every release in order for even basic modding to take place. Minecraft needs proper modding support.

My son just asked if he could get the new storymode addon for b-day, so it's obviously still chugging along.
But no amount of clon-i-ness is going to be successful with a following.
Why would it when you could just go get minecraft and experience the real deal. Baffling really.

You'll want to make sure your son knows that Minecraft Story Mode isn't actually Minecraft. It's a new Telltale Games series that is based on the "lore" of Minecraft.

It's basically a click adventure with a Minecraft look. You don't get to build like you do in Minecraft or dig. The game gives the player controls over certain decisions, but that's about it. It's upsetting, because it really does seem like it would be just another "mode" for Minecraft, but it's not.

I saw reviews on steam and people didn't accept Story Mode warmly. One guy thought it was an actual game and in first person.

Yes, it is written in c, unity is not something a game like Minecraft could be made without severe performance issues. Yes, I am making this game. It is for my own enoyment, I simply feel it interesting enough to share. The selling is just to motivate me, and is exciting and fun.

If that's what you think then you should actually go research Unity a bit more and look at the games that have been made with it.

There's no hate. It's just something that's been done a hundred times... nothing new and interesting.. and of course you're posting about a non-unity minecraft knockoff in the Unity community forums. I think the issue is that it's not relatable to the audience here.

You came into a Unity forum advertising a "Crazy awesome NEW Minecraft-like game!"

    Said game:
    1. Has no terrain generation features
    2. Doesn't have running water
    3. Doesn't really have anything more than the most basic systems in place
    4. Offers nothing new at all
    5. Isn't developed in Unity despite this being a Unity forum
    6. Is yet another Minecraft clone bringing nothing new to the table
So yeah, no duh people are rolling their eyes at you.

Think of it more as constructive criticism. We've all seen Minecraft clones many times before. Nothing you've shown us leads us to think this is better than Minecraft. We're shooting it down with realism, helping you fail faster and move onto your next idea.

Also your game isn't even being made in Unity and you're posting on Unity forums which doesn't make sense.

OK, fine I understand you all like unity 3d, hurray for Unity. It doesn't matter, if I were to listen to advice, I would have never even started programming in the first place. A game truly can only be made if someone simply wants to make it, which is the case now. I love Minecraft, am simply addicted to it, however, I hate java because it runs lag. I play MineBetter™ now, and add stuff as I go along. It is fun to me. I did not really plan to make MineBetter™, I just started doing 3d stuff and saw the challenge of moving through 3d with the keys, and it just kept going. I didn't plan on posting the demos, I just thought it was interesting.

You didn't plan on posting the demos.

    You just did.

    A whole bunch of them.

Then you came to literally Unity 3D Dot Com and posted them, claiming it's "crazy awesome" (a claim I have yet to see substantiated) despite not using Unity at all. Hell, you even call your game MineBetter™ despite it having less features than Minecraft did in its infancy.

People are being hard on you because this is nothing new and you're treating it like junk. Now people are being harder on you because of your attitude.

Well yeah, you came to the Unity forums and started a thread, what would you expect?

Take it as a lesson in marketing. Find your target audience and show the product to them. If you want people to be excited about your game you need to show them something new and interesting that they haven't seen before, not a clone of a popular game that has already been cloned many many times.

If you do not have any interest in Unity then posting on the official Unity forum is counterproductive. If you want to attract attention for your game you need a different forum and a more substantial product. If you merely want to discuss game development then you need to approach us with something other than a cheesy advertisement.

Frankly the thread title you used sounds like something I'd have expected from a

Advice from whom? We don't discourage people from learning programming here.

Java is not entirely to blame here. Minecraft is both poorly coded and substantially more complex than it appears at first.

Awesome. Thank you all for your thoughtful replies. I don't know how to delete threads, or I would. Although I do think my game will be better, because it is already in many aspects such as game loading time < 1 second, lighting I think looks better, as well as some other things to come.

I was thinking the same thing. There is a bunch of us in this forum that think everybody should learn programming, since programming is one of the most useful skills in the world. Learn many programming languages and write code every day.

I beg to differ. My voxel game does the full smooth lighting/3D noise/tree/plant generation/particle effects/physics (with slopes and all), you name it, and the player is in the world playing instantly (0 wait). The rest of the world loads really fast on the background threads - just a few seconds to load 500ish chunks around the player.

And it performs at a solid 60 fps with only about 4-5ms of the 16 needed for 60 fps taken up.

So to say Unity can't make voxel engines perform is silly! And, looking at the roadmap, it's only going to get better.

OP, your thread title and lack of description just made you look less serious, leaving everyone to guess about the game while you were away.

To everyone, randomly generated chunks with lighting and fast performance is a lot of work, even if it's been done already million times. It may look too simple to some professional programmers, but for others it took a lot of thinking and effort. if I were to make a it, I would've been really happy with my work and may have shared it online.

I remember my first game, which was an infinite runner in a top-down 2D perspective, released on Android last year (it's gone now). It had no audio and had very basic sprites, but I was so happy for my first game (back then I had very little skill in Unity - I even used UnityScript).

Some may remember, one guy created a thread on Unity forums, making fun of my game, which made me angry how he didn't understand how much effort it took me to make that game regardless of how stupid and simple it was.

Not mocking anyone, just trying to say that we must appreciate and encourage someone's work.
Except for asset flippers of....they must go away asap!

Would you've also presented the game in a manner similar to the OP though? It is one thing to be proud of your work and throw up a thread showing your current progress, but it is entirely different claiming you have a "crazy awesome new" game with nothing to actually show for it yet.

Yes, I'll admit I was harsh. I wouldn't have been though if the thread wasn't suggesting the existence of a game that stood to compete with a multi-billion dollar success. I'll give him credit for being further along than the idea guys though.
