Crashing every time I try to switch build platform in 2019.4.16f1

Following the steps in Unity Learn exactly as they are laid out, Unity crashes every time I click switch platform to windows. This would be the third unit in a row that I've been unable to complete due to technical issues. Searching shows many many many posts about this issue going back very far. At least one thread a year with many people saying it also happens to them.

I've tried to switch the build platform three times now and every time it's a full crash at exactly the same point.

 

Try this:

- close Unity
- back up your project completely or put it under proper source control
- within the project directory, delete the Library (and possibly the Temp) folder (the ones next to Assets, Packages and ProjectSettings)
- from UnityHub, select the build target you want and launch Unity to cause it to import directly into there.

 

Thanks this should be pinned or something. These steps have resolved a lot of crashes in various projects, even when simply opening a project.

What causes projects to start crashing randomly after being opened? One day they'll work, the next day they will start crashing every time they open, even without making any changes to them.
