The message alone doesn't give any information, you need to post whatever is written in the log file created when you get this error (located in the folder the message refers to).

I've been having this problem too. I'm receiving instant crashes on startup on most of my Unity games (including Wasteland 2, Shadowrun Returns, and Gone Home, but not Endless Space, strangely enough. The Forest works to the title page but starting the game proper causes an instant crash), on both my desktop and laptop systems. A strange detail is that my desktop had always had this problem with Wasteland 2 and only Wasteland 2, going back to the release of their beta, but the problem has now spread to all Unity games on all of my platforms (save ES).

Since nothing's easy, it appears that the games aren't producing output_log.txt files at this point, even though the report.ini files say they should be. I will, however, upload the DxDiag and output_log files from Wasteland 2 as of a week ago - I submitted these to InXile support and they assumed it was a driver issue. My GPU drivers were out of date, but have now been updated, and the problem persists... just without output logs. Given that these are out of date they may not be exactly what you need, but rest assured that the GPU drivers were not the problem. I'd read that font corruption might be a cause of universal crashes but deleting fonts flagged as corrupt didn't fix the problem.

Details that may or may not be helpful: Both Wasteland 2 and The Forest crash immediately after their unique mouse cursors load (so maybe fonts really are the issue? How would I fix that?)

Thanks in advance for your help. This is pretty mystifying to me.

@Danzig This is a very strange sounding issue, especially since you have a least one working Unity game. That means the issue has to relate something they all access, which as InXile have said, usually means drivers or OS.

If you create a build from a new project in Unity, do you get the crash and log file? Do you get the crash running from the editor?

Of course, this is assuming you're also using Unity as a developer, I notice from your post you only mention games you play. If this isn't the case, I can probably provide an entirely 'empty' Unity build for you to try and see what happens.

Yeah, I'm not a developer. Just some dude who searched high and low for this particular cross-system problem only to end up here. The possibility remains that there is some driver issue that is somehow shared between both platforms (the only thing that I can think of would be a printer driver, but that wouldn't make much sense, would it?) but yes, as of now Endless Space works and nothing else seems to, on both of my systems. For the sake of thoroughness I've uploaded the output and DxDiag for my desktop machine, for a Wasteland 2 crash incurred just a few minutes ago. Maybe it will shed some light, maybe not.

If you have a test program that I could run, I would definitely give it a shot and return to you with results.

Since you've updated your drivers, I'd get back to InXile with that new output_log, they may have a better idea what going on.

Other general things (Some obvious things, but just being thorough!):
Printer - Unlikely to be the cause, but have you added any new gamepad / joystick / wireless mouse recently? Try with just the barebone peripherals attached, do a restart and see if anything runs.

Steam - Do all of the games you have issue with come from Steam? What about Endless space? Have you tried verifying / re-installing any of them?

Check Hard Drive space - on both the drive where Steam is installed and the drive where the game is (if different).

Anti Virus - Got it? Is it being over-zealous with Unity games? Any quarantine logs for any of the effect games? Any change if put the game install folder on the ignore/approve list?

I've attached added a link to 'blank' Unity build. It should basically show a Unity logo, then a blue-grey screen (You may have to re-assure you AV that it isn't a virus, they can be a bit over-protective with developer built exe files). Give it a try and see what happens.

    DropBox Link: Empty_Test.zip

Note: If you run it fullscreen, there's no exit button, so you'll need to force quit it through task manager - I didn't want to put ANY scripts into it to keep the test as pure as possible.

I went through the list - there are no shared peripherals but I went barebones on them just in case, to no effect. Steam is indeed the platform for all games, including the one that works. Space is good, anti-virus isn't a problem as far as I can tell (when programs excluded / service disabled temporarily).

The empty test seems to work without a hitch - I'm getting the blue-gray screen and no crashes. Another clue: Since I was itching to play the beta for a new game out today, I built a fresh windows partition from scratch on an external drive, and only installed display / sound / wireless drivers, plus those pushed by windows update, along with Steam, and all games seem to work without a hitch. So it probably is some mystery driver accumulated over the months / years of use, I just don't know which one.

Thanks for your help! I'm not quite sure what investigation we can do beyond this point, beyond installing / uninstalling programs and drivers at random to see what breaks. For the moment I'll just have to boot into this partition if I want to play any of the affected games.

Well at least you have a solution for now, sorry I couldn't help you find the exact cause. If it was me I'd think about doing a fresh install of Windows - can be a bit painful in the short term, but would definitely annoy me less than constant boot swapping!

    Good luck ;)

Hey, just wanted to let everyone know that the problem is fixed. After all this fuss, it was exactly what these forums had previously identified it as - a font file called UNCLL.tff . The problem as I experienced was that, despite not being registered and seemingly unused by anything, it was marked as an OS file, and is thus protected from any searches conducted when system files are set to hidden (I keep them hidden because I keep my desktop organized and the ghostly files annoy me). I only realized it was actually there (after several fruitless searches over the last few weeks) using an old program called Fix Fonts Folder, which apparently has no regard for Windows' file visibility settings. I had a bit of trouble actually deleting the file once I'd confirmed it was there, because of the Font control panel's stubborn refusal to show ungrouped files, but I managed it, and now things are working.

So that was a whole lot of runaround for a very small problem, eh? I hadn't anticipated that the font could have been hidden by default and naively assumed that windows filesearch crossed all its T's and dots all its I's. So if anyone is facing these uniform crashes, make sure to disable system file hiding before hunting down the file (open up a finder window -> press alt -> tools -> folder options -> view -> uncheck "hide protected operating system file").

For simplicity's sake it would be cool if Unity untangled itself from that troublesome file at some point down the road, but we can take solace in the fact that it's not some huge thing, yeah? :) Thanks for your help NomadKing. I know some people have reported killing UNCLL.tff doesn't fix the problem, but this should help those who can't seem to find it. It's easy to miss if you don't have system files visible, which I assume most gamers don't.

Thanks for taking the time to post back with an update Danzig - good to know you found the cause, I'd have never guessed that one! :p

You should probably contact the developer of the game(s) that you can't run. They can help you much better than random people on the internet.

I had this problem and it was driving me mad. I finally found a post somewhere that suggested the problem was caused by citrix. I uninstalled citrix workspace, restarted and the problem is finally gone. No idea why this was the issue but very pleased to finally be able to play unity games again.

i got the same problem with my computer. cannot play any unity games either from steam or any other gaming platform. as long as it is made by unity engine, after a few minutes it will CTD.

many people said that uninstalling citrix really do solve the problem. but my problem is I never installed citrix on my computer.

any other unlucky soul have the same problem with me?
