control tracks vs activation tracks

    since control tracks also control activation, can i use them instead of activation tracks?

    when controlling the activation of a gameObject with no playable attached, is there any real difference between a control track and an activation track?

    Not really. The difference is the activation track has an option as to what state to leave the object in when the timeline stops playing (either from it ending, or explicitly stopped).
