Currently, I have a simple game that uses photon network. Photon network has many limitations including 20 CCU for the free version. And I just want to use dedicated server because using photon feels like I didn't create the game all on my own. I happen to have a spare linux at home which I can use as a dedicated server.

Is there a way to modify the current photon network system to use my linux as a dedicated server? OR do I .have to start from beginning

I don't believe you can use the photon networking API while not being subject to photon's licensing limits.

You can do this - the instructions are here.

I think Joe-Censored is correct about the licensing limit. There is a section in that link stating "Until you apply a license file, Photon will be limited to 20 concurrent connections". But you gotta say, that is only reasonable. They are providing you with a networking solution that is both simple and works. Unlike UNET which is more tricky to work with and is, ultimately, somewhat flawed.

Out of interest, what are the other limitations you see in Photon?

Mostly the fact that there is a 20 CCU limit. And I just want to build something without the help of external source.

Oh, and I just found out that you can have 100 CCU for free. Link: https://dashboard.photonengine.com/en-us/SelfHosted
Why does this exist? I thought the free version was only 20 CCU.

When you are self hosting you're not putting nearly as much of a strain on their resources compared to using Photon's servers, so they give you a bit more for free.

    Oh wow. Nice find.

Now I just need to write a game that will pull in more than 20 people to give me an excuse to download it. :)

Maybe to try and pull in more customers I guess?

So it is not true that photon has 20 CCU limit, but 100 CCU?

Depends on which kind of photon you are using.

The 100 CCU is if you are hosting your own servers.

the 20 CCU is if you are using Photon's servers

The advantage of using Photon's servers is you can setup your game to connect the user to the server with the lowest ping across all their regions.

If you self-host then where are you going to host your servers? If you host one, then where do you put it? Which geographic region? Realtime multiplayer is successful when players have a low ping, if you have a server in the US and the player is in Europe, it won't be a very good gaming experience.

Also hosting servers costs money, my advice? Use Photon's servers and save yourself the hassle.

Probably best if you make a much more detailed thread asking this question than Necropost.
