Color over Lifetime - documentation???

Anyone that know where one can find documentation to understand things like the "Color over Lifetime" in particle systems better?
Would have thought Unity would have some sort of documentation on this but I can't find anything that really explains all this. Have to exist at least one place where each part is explained. I refuse to believe someone actually created this and then didn't write any documentation regarding how to use it.

And yes, I know I could just experiment to find out but:
1) I don't want to missunderstand the effects.
2) It's way to often that there are things that this happens and one have to "experiment" or hope someone has understood it correctly and speend 2 hours doing something that could have been read in 2 minutes.
